No more AMEX surcharge at JB Hi Fi

I see I am not the first to comment. Obviously gift cards were a good alternative, but I like the immediacy of being able to use my Amex in the store.
JB can park sales orders, which is really good for gift cards.

JB has egift cards where you can buy to the exact dollar, so I would go into JB, get the item, ask the sales rep to create an order and park it, say the order is $186, then the sales rep walk away and serve the next customer, I go onto my phone, buy a gift card for exactly $186, pay 5% off being $176.7 using my Citi Visa, then walk up to the cash register and pay $186 with e gift card.

The SQ point I earn from AmEx do not worth 5%.

API Lifestyle once wrote in their bi monthly magazine, asking if you have ever walked up to the check out at Coles, the check out chick asks you for $100, then you offer $105 and say:
'I would like to pay $5 extra because I love Coles so much.'
?
If you don't do this, then why aren't you using gift cards? 😏

Paying with gift cards you won't get the extended insurance offered by some Amex cards or if buying a phone, screen protection.

Except that your purchase is covered by ACL regardless, which makes these insurance policies a joke.

For example, in Peters v Panasonic Australia Pty Ltd , where a TV died after 2.5 years, it came out that a TV is expected to last 8 years, and hence Panasonic had to compensate the buyer. Tell me what credit card insurance would cover your LCD TV for 8 years?

I disagree, but everyone's situation is different. I think it would be better to say that for your situation the extra cover provided is of no benefit, rather than calling it a joke.

For example, ACL does NOT cover accidental damage to mobile phone screens.

Other things covered that can be of benefit to some people is the refund protection cover. Ie, if you simply change your mind with the required period and the product is unused, if the retailer won't give you your money back, Amex will. Again, ACL does not cover change of mind scenarios.

Now while ACL does cover the example above, if I was getting uphill from a retailer and my only option was legal action, I'd much prefer to take the easy option and just file a claim with my card insurance. Same outcome, less of my time wasted.

I thought Good Guys and JB HiFI were owned by the same company so it's bizarre that one charged the surcharge and the other didn't

I've done this many times, but not parking the order. It takes literally a minute to buy the gift card in the method you describe and while they're faffing around, it is ready to go.
