Hi All.. looking for some advice. I have recently had some financial problems so currently cannot get a QFF-linked Credit Card.

Does anyone any tips as to how I can earn points without one?

Can I somehow move FlyBuys across to QFF points?

Are there any Visa debit cards that link to points?

Thanks

Basically, the point of credit cards is they "reward" you in the hope you'll be charged interest so they get their money back. With a multi-access or Visa Debit card, you're only ever using your money so they won't reward you for it.

It doesn't take much to get a credit card, provided you can show an income of at least $200 a week you'll be able to get one (with a lower limit though)

Not if the "recent credit problems" include a default listing with Baycorp - or worse.

Best put those cc plans on hold until at least 2010.

Yes, but you'll need the assistance (and trust) of one of your family members who has a CC linked to their QFF account.

Organise a Supplementary card attached to their CC account. You'll have to be responsible for payment of your bills, of course.

Once they have transferred the points to their QFF card (unless it's a Qantas ANZ Visa that automatically transfers it), they can then do a family transfer of points from their QFF account to yours.

The only downside is that they can only transfer points to you once/year and the maximum is 100K points. This may not be ideal, however I think it's your only feasible option.

Hopefully in the future your credit history will be better...but know that defaults etc are placed on your file for up to 5 years.

The only bank that I've come across that has a rewards program associated with a debit card (Visa) is Bendigo Bank. Trouble is it costs $2/mth for the program fee for debit card holders, and earn:burn ratio is pretty bad, unless you're frequently using bonus partners.

Thanks all for the suggestions.

I knew I could get some advice from the pros here..

:D

To be honest if you're paying off some debt I would look at paying it off first before trying to get a few points from a credit card which only cost you more money anyway (accom, transport, dinners etc...)

points are great but its not a system thats designed for the financially challenged

And if it's just a default in your credit file - go see a lawyer they can help speed up the process in a lot of circumstances.

The australian system is so easy to get around its rediculous

hey d00t,

Care to elaborate on how easy it is to get around the Australian credit reporting system?

And how would a lawyer help - perhaps one could use a lawyer to convince Baycorp the default listing was a mistake?

Not that I need this info to get a listing off, but I will always try and arm myself with info for the future!

well its pretty easy really.. just because something is on your file does not mean that it BELONGS there and that you need to wait out the 1-7 year term for it to dissapear!

Secondly...companies need to belong to a special group to put a cross against your name - and let's just say that not all companies demonstrate the highest degree of integrity.

baycorp is not the only credit agency

and lastly, nothing is free.... well..except my advice....but I'll gladly go into detail for the right price

I agree with this, and I think the only way to make it dissapear is to convince Baycorp it was done in error, right?

I have never heard of this. If you sign the Privacy Act of 1988 in an agreement with Wong's Chinese Takeaway to receive credit, and you default on the payment of a Mongolian Lamb takeaway, Mr Wong will put a default listing on your Baycorp credit file.

What is this "special group" you mention? :?:

True, but you can bet if you're applying for any kind of credit card in Australia they will go through Baycorp.

what can you provide details on?

The "special group" are those employers (that are credit providers, either consumer credit or commercial credit) that pay a fee to Baycorp annually for (mainly) web-based access - it used to be mainly telephone and mail-based initially. One can enquire on a persons' credit history or place credit account details on a person's (or company's) credit file. This then allows other credit providers with information to enable them to make a creditworthiness assessment. Credit providers can also place information about late payments, defaults, court action (pending and finalised).

Nothing really that "special" about it....one of my family companies is a registered user of the service.

From the baycorp FAQ listing:
"Under The Privacy Act (federal legislation that governs what information can be held and the length of time it can be held for) credit providers who you have applied to for credit, or goods and services where payment is deferred by a minimum of seven days may access your file."

The special group dont seem to be that special!
