I was fiddling around with looking at a Premium one-way Reward flight from SYD to AKL. Knowing that the minimum points redemption was 6,900 points and balance is cash, I went to the final screen where I could change the balance of points and cash.

Normally, any Trans-Tasman booking attracts a $7 credit card fee when you pay the remaining part of the ticket in dollars rather than points. This is shown to you at the bottom part of the payment page when it tells you that the amount you're about to charge your selected card will include the fee. However, if I slide the slider more towards the "all points" end of the scale, the credit card fee notice disappears. In between the "cut point" where the notice appears / disappears is a noticeable drop or increase of $7 (plus a little amount reflective of moving the slider anyway).

This seems to imply that if you pay in points enough, there is no credit card fee. Not that it's a biggie - sometimes it's better just to pay minimum or small points, cop the fee and pay a certain amount in dollars.

Does anyone know what's the deal here? (Something I missed?)

Nup - seen it myself.

At least the CC fee (when charged) is represented in the $ component and not as a nasty later surprise.

(After booking one can see it separated.)

Does Qantas have a 'no credit card fee' for using one of the Qantas credit cards?
If so, you could save some points by opting to pay $7+ and then not get the credit card fee?

This is in relation to the Virgin scheme.
