How was the Bird in Hand? It's on my list to try once I can drink again.

Group notes on it:

Bird In Hand 2020: Light salmon-pink in colour. Very sweet and confectioned nose, with strawberries, rose petal and florals – it was commented that the nose was “bright”. The palate has prominent acid, and is a “dialled down” version of the nose. Short finish.

In my opinion, not a wine I would seek out. Just not my style. Alright on a super hot day, but not a serious wine IMHO. Also a bit confused as to where the fruit comes from for this wine. Given the Adelaide Hills fires around Xmas 2019, I would have thought the fruit in the area would either destroyed or full of smoke taint.

This 2009 Tas Domaine A was excellent (particularly as I got it from Langtons as a $75 confidential and then took another $50 off it with a voucher). Had it with some boiled beef and horseradish sauce. Nom nom. Halliday gives it til 2039 but I reckon it won't get much better than it is now at age 11...

Had a boys wine night catered from my cellar over the weekend, went to Andly Private Kitchen, which allow BYO at $2.50 a head. Table was fiarly evenly split on WOTN, with a few votes for the Riddoch, Clonakilla, Jack Mann and Duval Leroy.

What did you think of Andly? I think it's a fantastic little venue. What value meal did you go for? I've done both the $100 and $150 and thought the $150 is a big step in food and well worth the extra cost.

We did the $150 and everyone was happy with the dishes, in particular the scallops noodle salad was exceptional. There was some dissatisfaction with the lobster course; we had to don plastic gloves a bit like you do when eating chilli crab in Singapore, but I thought it was excellent with tender lobster and a delicious broth. Overall I was happy with the experience, but I think without being able to bring your own wine it would struggle to complete with restaurants like Wildflower.

I have previously done a higher value meal ($250 from memory), and was very impressed with that, so I'm not sure where the sweet spot for value is.

Despite *terrible* cellaring conditions (I didn’t know better) and two trips across the Nullarbor over the past 10 years, this little beauty is still in good form! I was anticipating pouring it down the drain tonight whilst crying 😭. Goes to show that quality wine can be sturdier than we sometimes expect.
A wonderful shiraz, full of flavour, aided nicely by bottle aging.
Happy Wednesday, all 🍷
