Nice wines I have drunk recently - Red or White

I guess the only upside to Stage 4 lockdown MEL is that it gives ample opportunity to work on your drinking.

Personally I have been hard at it over last 7 days chasing a new PB - short term goal is to achieve sub 1 bott / day - it ain’t easy but no pain no gain hey? 👍

Nice!

Had the 98’ recently, also drank beautifully.

I like going into uncharted territories with quaffers, some of them are surprisingly great way past their drink by date.

Wow boomy, that's a pretty cool coincidence that you were drinking some old Zema recently. It's not something you see a lot of about these days, even if Dan's do still sell it. The 2000 was a great surprise, as I truly expected the middle to have fallen out of it, but it was simply great. I can imagine the 1998 would have been even better.

I wish I had been able to get more when it was $10 at BWS recently...I got the last one.

Took this to a Thai restaurant in Subiaco last night. Cork turned out to be a disaster and they didn't have a decanter. Spent the first give minutes fishing out cork bits from the wine. Wine was sound, if perhaps lacking a tiny bit of acidity. Still a good wine that went perfectly with the food. Only 8.5% ABV. A pint of 7.5% ABV beer I had later in the evening contained my alcohol than my share of this bottle!

Opened this John Riddoch1998 last night - took 3-4 hours in decanter before that "over-ripe damson" bouquet had cleared. I wasn't blown away. I'd certainly be disappointed if I'd given Dan $179 for it.
Overall a good Cabernet but I've been just as pleased with $50-60 bottles.
Last time I drank one of these 98's was about 5 years ago and my recollection is a much happier one.
None left now. :<(

Got it for $20 during the recent Vintage Cellars clearance.
This wine makes you think. First impression on the nose is more of Sherry than Shiraz. Is it off? No it’s not. Taste of plum and cherries the colour is dark but it’s not full bodied. Drinks well now, may improve further but I’m not sure as it doesn’t taste like young Shiraz. Very interesting wine.

My Monday night treat/adventure was another that I truly expected to be good for cooking only, if that, having sat forgotten in the cellar forever. But it turned out to be amazing (with my veal cordon bleu). The picture doesn't do justice to the deep yellow colour. Flavour is buttery, smooth, full and complex, with no hint of sourness. In 2003 Mr Halliday suggested drinking by 2007 and gave it a massive 89pts. There you go...
