Nice wines I have drunk recently - Red or White

Only thing to drink on the winter solstice even if officially you are in the tropics-

A nice port.

Dinner with friends last night at Petit Mort. We started with the 2007 Arras Grand Vintage. Right up there with the Frenchies at that price point. An old Jura and a rather rate Barolo.

Re: Nice Wines I have DranK Recently - Red or White

Just trying the back-up wine to my 1999 themed recent birthday dinner:

the Bass Phillip Old Cellar Chardonnay 1999

I chose wrongly.

This would have killed the two Whites I did select (the Lovedale 98 and the Vat 1 99).

The best White of 2017 for me, and possibly the best I'll have this year, I concluded:

1999 Bass Phillip Chardonnay Old Cellar, Australia, Victoria, Gippsland - CellarTracker

"Wow. Just wow. So this is what top end aged Aussie Chardonnay delivers after 18 years.

I have little to report on this rare wine. Except to say it's made by Bass Phillip, one of Australia's eminent wineries that produces arguably Australia's best Pinot Noir from Gippsland, South Victoria.

It's so fresh. Yet beautifully matured. Deep orange gold. Slightly cloudy (showcasing the minimal intervention taken). Incredible nose that speaks so perfectly of that penetrating medium-bodied palate. As fig, lemon, lime, lanolin, sweet tobacco gum, slate and spice tantalise the senses. The mid palate charge and tingle belies its years. The finish sweet and smokey, with fine lime that simmers as your satisfaction endorphins kick in.

It's a great wine that reminds me of a fine Single Malt Whiskey. A Wozza 96/100 (4.4/5.0) from me.
"

Very blessed indeed. If I spot this in the auctions (1 October onwards!), then I'm definitely going in for more.

Cheers, Wozza

How does it compare to the '98 Yattarna? I found that hugely oaked, but I guess that was the style in the day - otherwise the structure was great.

If the Chardonnay is a good one then oak certainly does not help at all. I avoid anything with a woody taste.

Just Chardonnay? I found Silver Oak very woody (in a good way)

Which Silver Oak Steady? I will be back in Silver Oak country in about 5 weeks. The Napa red was pretty good when I was in the US recently.

Steady that one was $28 a glass at Ruth's Chris which is our local steakhouse in Marina del Rey. They rotate various wines through their offerings so I tend to try something different each visit. That would be $28 USD plus tip but it works ok because you don't end up with full bottles of reds you really don't like.
Marina del Rey is about 10 minutes north up Lincoln from LAX.

Enjoyed a lovely 2013 Encore Noble Riesling from Pegasus Bay in NZ last night; went down nicely with the Apple pie I whipped up.

Better, AC.

The oak was in pefect step and balance with the aged fruit, the fine acid line and the grainy tannins. There was no buttery or creaminess here. Just tobacco laced goodness. It reminded me of an aged Whiskey. That peaty kind of smokiness. Hence the 4.5 stars / Wozza 96. It's a pretty special wine in my books.

The first pinot shiraz blend i had was mount pleasant mount herny 2011, quite fresh and light and taste liek strawberry jelly. This is a different style, not sure what the % of pinot and shiraz is in this wine but to me the pinot stands out, earthy , still a bit tide, a good finish at the end. for $14.99 this is a steal.
