Nice wines I have drunk recently - Red or White

Mount Pleasant "Mountain A" shiraz 2011: sourced from various Rosehill vineyard plantings (1946 through 1990s) with 20 months in oak. Savoury spice and cherry on the nose. The body is medium, with cherries, plums, spice and chalky tannins all nicely concentrated. Nice lingering finish. A great lighter style Hunter shiraz. CT91

Cracked the Grant Burge Hilcot Merlot 2013 and what a very pleasant experience that was (not least because of CM's largesse the other week) a wine that is drinking very well now, soft, opulent, lush with long viscous legs in the glass. The palate sprawls across a landscape populated with satsuma and cassis, the oak growing in the far distance, gently rounded with nothing to jar the senses. By the third night it had filled the horizon with fields of fruit gently unfolding in waves of soft sensuousness, I'm not going to bother with a score, just enjoy fellow hedonists....Hillcot-Merlot-Grey-Label-150x530.png

What a great note. Such poetry. Thanks for sharing, W&D.

Great words. I now no longer need lysergic acid diethylamide for my spiritual transformation to a kaleidoscopic world infused with amazing colours. Reading your comments about a nice drop will suffice in the future thankyou very muchly.

In an amazing timing coincidence, I was looking at my tasting notes yesterday and the Irvine springhill merlot popped up a few months back. That wine, very reasonably priced as well, was a beauty as well.

The 2004 movie with Giamatti and Church led to Merlot sales dropping. You WandD should be on the next Aus wine merlot marketing team waxing lyrically like you do.

Thanks Wozza!

Hey man don't take the Brown Brothers I mean the brown acid :)! I had completely forgotten Sideways (the movie for all those who don't know the reference) a bloody good romp and here's a link to flesh out it out for those who don't get the allusion Missing Out On Merlot: How Sideways Almost Killed One Of The World's Great Grapes | VinePair I'm happy to sign up BF for the Merlot Marketing gig as long as they ply me with more quality wines like the GB or perhaps a Blue Poles Reserve or three!

It reminds me of the halcyon days when VinoMofo used to snag great wines at great prices. I think I'm almost a year into my mof_ abstinence (following 3 returns in a row), hoping the great wines at great prices will return. Sadly, I think mof_ have moved on to a more mass market model, and I've moved on with more demanding expectations. So I can't imagine I'll be buying regularly from them like I did last year. Such a shame. As they were a great company and still have two visionary, industry pioneering leaders at the helm. But I can't be bothered to sort the marketing BS from the marketing BS to work out what's okay from the good. I want better than good. I want wines like this V&A Shiraz.

Here's hoping ...

Totally agree. When you boom a good deal on V&A shiraz, you know you're getting something special.

Ol'mate turns up to divvy the spoils of recent weeks...a quick grab at the rack and presto..2008 Tonic Shiraz - Fountain of Youth...This was an absolute corker and definitely not for the faint hearted or those who prefer a little more elegance. Tamed Barossan behemoth. As soon as it was opened, xmas pud wafted upwards, even causing Mrs WDT to comment from the other side of the kitchen. Massive silky mouthfeel, still very much fruit forward...blackberries, anise, a light dollop of vanilla ,with the faintest of heat on the finish, being the only distraction....

Returned from a few days on the road (or in the air to be more precise). Decided to crack this open. Very nice. Smooth and silky. Despite best intentions to leave some for 24 hours to taste in on day 2 - emptied in no time.

That's a completely new label to me WDT, I'm a notorious lover of big reds (at least on this forum!) and this one sounds like it would be right up my alley, what's the alcohol level like just out of curiosity?

I think it says 15% on the top right of label in the photo?

Yes Steady got it...may have been too hot in its youth..my cellar tracking skills are non existent....much to my regular cohorts disgust (they keep very detailed accts on their large cellars...always an adventure when perusing the racks.."vinozheimer" I call it..don't quote me but I have a vague recollection I got this through Matt at GWD years ago...price..well no idea....
I still have a couple so it wouldn't have been exy.

W&d, I too have enjoyed many a big Barossan red but this Amarone easily trumps the aforementioned 15% alc without tasting porty or being overtly hot! I think you would enjoy this style.

What can I say - the hyperbole for 2014 Hunter Shiraz is surely true, if this little number is anything to go by!

the Mount Pleasant Old Paddock & Old Hill Shiraz 2014

As you'll see from my tasting note below, this was all about balance, finesse and intensity, all wrapped in a delicate medium-bodied wrapper:

http://www.vivino.com/users/warren-dav/reviews/54343470

2014 McWilliam's Mount Pleasant Wines Shiraz Old Paddock & Old Hill, Australia, New South Wales, Hunter Valley, Pokolbin - CellarTracker

"The Hunter Valley was blessed with a 10/10 vintage in 2014. So it's no surprise many of its Reds are selling out pre-release, like this mid-level Mount Pleasant Shiraz that boasts some of the oldest Shiraz vines in the region (1880 and 1921). At the '1880 member' price of $40, this is a steal, even at this young stage. Halliday said 97. Hooke, 96. Wozza - a 96.5/100 (4.5/5.0)! (With more to come).

It's simply sublime, and such easy, sophisticated drinking, punching above its pay grade; as blackberry, sweet blood plum, tar, liquorice, sage, rosemary and black pepper combine seamlessly on the nose, medium-bodied, silky smooth palate & fine finish.

Exquisite. Simply exquisite.

Don't let Ralphy see this review Wozza. Then again, there's not much out there, if any.

Delectable Blue would also be extremely keen.

Whoops that'll teach me not to do due diligence...

I haven't visited GWD very much of late but obviously this is going back quite a way (looking at the 2009 vintage on the label) managed to find it still for sale through Nicks https://www.nicks.com.au/2010-tonic-estate-fountain-of-youth-shiraz? So $23 doesn't sound too bad considering your decent reportage on it, 2010 but that was hardly a bad year in the Barossa...

Thanks for the heads-up, I'm dead-set curious about the Amarone style, I'll have to try and seek some out, Rug another FF'er big wine enthusiast would probably like it too if he hasn't already tried it yet...

the Mount Pleasant Estate Old Paddock & Old Hill Shiraz 2014 ....

Where did you get your hands on one of these? I tried to buy a few, but I was away during members pre-sale.
Hopefully will pick up a few soon. I'm getting married in the hunter next year, if I sell her the idea of 'wedding souvenir' wines, I won't have to hide more boxes :)

You will be very lucky in getting some I would think. All the stars aligned for this wine and vintage with Pluto being the price.
By the way, something I didn't know - Pluto is usually farthest from the Sun. However, its orbit "crosses" inside of Neptune's orbit for 20 years out of every 248 years. Pluto last crossed inside Neptune's orbit on February 7, 1979, and temporarily became the 8th planet from the Sun.

That said, Langtons have the 2014 Tyrell's Vat 9, and the Mount Pleasant 1880 and 1921 vines in stock.
