Qantas today launched the first stage of its international Faster, Smarter Check-in with new Q Card Readers now operational at key trans-Tasman ports.

Qantas CEO Alan Joyce said Faster Smart Check-in would provide trans-Tasman customers with greater ease when checking in for flights to and from New Zealand.

“Faster, Smarter Check-in has proved so popular with our frequent flyers for their domestic travel, we are now implementing stage one of our international roll out with Sydney, Auckland and Wellington,” Mr Joyce said.

“Our trans-Tasman frequent flyers can now scan their frequent flyer card and passport and retrieve their boarding pass within seconds of arriving at the airport. It’s all about cutting down the journey time for our customers.”

The new trans-Tasman Q Card Reader Check-in means Platinum, Gold and Silver Frequent Flyers and Qantas Club members travelling across the Tasman will be able to use their Qantas card to check-in at an internationally configured Q Card Reader, streamlining their international experience.

Customers travelling between Australia and New Zealand, who hold an Australian or New Zealand passport, will be able to scan their Qantas card at the Q icon as per the process for the domestic Q Card Reader. They then scan their passport at the reader located below the Q icon, completing their check-in.

The Faster, Smarter Check-in process has responded to the changing needs of Qantas’ most valued customers and has delivered new levels of speed and ease for the domestic check-in experience.

The introduction of the Q Card Readers forms the first phase of Qantas’ plans to broaden the use of the award-winning technology to streamline the international check-in experience.

Trans-Tasman Q Card Readers will be progressively introduced to Melbourne, Brisbane and Queenstown throughout 2011, with plans to rollout the technology in Christchurch next year.

Wonder how this will impact issuing epass cards or does this include that change as well.

I do also wonder what other changes are coming..

Overall no impact for me as I will still use the F check in...

Looks interesting. I am flying from AKL on Saturday with carry on only so I might give it a try.

I wonder how it works with pre-cleared customs at Auckland. Qantas' website seems to lack important details about where the readers are. I guess somewhere near the Qantas check in area.

I assume you present your card and passport to the reader, it prints out a boarding pass with the express logo on, then you can take that to the customs desk in the premium check in lounge.

After another wholly frustrating JQi run, I do hope this is one of those bits of technology they can pass onto their sometimes-Qantas-Group-company - who knows, it might even result in some further savings in labour costs, or at the very least put a bit of pressure on and convince the ground staff that '3 hours before departure' is when check-in is supposed to open, not when they're supposed to leave the office. :/

[Edit] On topic, I saw the poles outside the premium check-in at the QF area in SYD today. Gave them a try for a laugh, but sadly they could not access the JQ system either. ;)

For the 'express pass' from what i've been told they still haven't decided if it will be printed on the boarding pass, or pritined on another print out from the q-card reader. Although my info is a little outdated.

These q-readers will look basically the same as the domestic ones, just a little bit wider to fit the BP printer and passport reader.

I tried it out in Auckland today was quite straight forward. There were two qcard readers - one just outside the premium check in lounge and one just inside it. If you didn't know what they were then they could just easily pass them off as decorations. There is no sign or instructions on it saying what it is for.

Just tap your FF card against it, then insert your passport and it spits out a boarding pass. There is a little screen that changes as you step through the process. The boarding pass is all in black and white. There was no mention or instructions about the pre-cleared customs and immigration. So I just took the BP and departure card to the pre-cleared customs desk in the premium check in lounge and got the sticker in the corner.

All worked quite well. I was the only person that used it will I was there. Handy if you are going with carry on only. If you have checked in bags you can check in but still have to bag drop at the desk, so not much point if you have check in bags.

without a bag drop facility not sure how many people would be able to use this. wonder how may people fly internationally with carry on only? still, like the technology.

As it's only for trans-tasman flight at the moment, there are quite a few people that don't checkin baggage.

One note - if you've OLCI'ed, these pylons can't handle it. The domestic pylons can still spit you a BP even if you've OLCI'ed, but not these ones.

Done three weeks and five countries with carry on only ;) I still wouldn't bother with this myself as I like the F check in in SYD.

Faster, Smarter Check-in for Trans-Tasman Flights

Friendly reminder: previously Faster, Smarter Check-in was available to tiered members only. Thanks to the new Qantas Card, all Frequent Flyer members holding a Q chip enabled card can use this award winning facility. :)

NB/ You cannot use Q Bag Tags on international flights
