NEWCASTLE Airport’s mission to soar as an international destination is on track after the approval of its $80million plans to super-size its facilities.

First look at $80m airport development plans | Newcastle Herald

In summary: larger terminal, international gates, etc but the one that caught my attention was "the second floor of the main new building to feature a dedicated international departure lounge, airline club lounges and duty-free retail outlets as well." Can anyone see Jetstar making the move to open a lounge there? I'd love VA to open a regional lounge there.

As per thread on AJ News conference this morning... with connection to Very Fast Rail QF will move QFi to NTL, allowing further expansion of Deathstar :mrgreen:

Yes please !!!!!!

Of course with the very fast railway to NTL there wouldn't need to be a second Sydney airport.

That would end one of the oldest chestnuts of news stories that get regurgitated with monotonous regularity.

You are so right HVR.
My tongue was firmly in my cheek with the previous post, but I don't know why it has been a more seriously considered option in the past

But which old chestnut gets repeated the most often with most monotonous regularity, SYD second airport or the VFR to link various combinations of cities...:?:

Two obvious reasons:

1 is that NTL is really on the wrong side of town (too far from SYD). If Newcastle's airport had been as far south of Newcastle as it is north it would be Sydney's defacto 2nd airport already.
2 (and more importantly) it's the RAAF. Williamtown is first and foremost a RAAF base with civilian access and there is already tension at the current scale. Only so much growth before it gets too hard.
