Hello - I will be on QF 50 in J from SFO to MEL later this week and will have about 3 hours to kill before my domestic connection (which is sadly not in J.) Will I be able to use a lounge in MEL? If so, which one, please? I am AA Plat if that makes any difference at all.

Thanks in advance.

Welcome aboard McNuss, Oneworld sapphire gets you into the Qantas Club - assuming your domestic flight is also on QF or JQ

(Not familiar with AA program- if AA Plat aligns with OW emerald you get into the QF Domestic J Lounge)

Welcome to AFF McNuss :)

AA plat aligns with Oneworld sapphire and this will grant access to the Qantas Club lounges.(if flying QF or JQ) - there are 2 tiers of lounges at SYD and MEL domestic terminals - the Qantas Club is the lesser of the two, but still pretty good.

Is your connecting flight on Qantas and the same ticket? If so then you'll have access to the MEL DOM J lounge by virtue of the international J flight.

Thank you all! I’m actually booked on 2 separate tickets for this trip as I thought I’d be spending my first 3 days in MEL but my clients thought otherwise and booked me for meetings on Monday in SYD. I decided it was easier to just go straight to SYD but changing the ticket was going to cost upwards of $2000USD so I booked a flex ticket on QF for 3 hours after arrival. I’d be super happy to spend the time in the lounge and would be even happier if one of them had showers. :)

Does not need to be on the same ticket.

OP, you should have access to the Qantas J lounge. Lounge access - over 600 lounges , multi destination flights

Connecting between oneworld marketed and operated flights:
  • First and Business Class customers connecting on the same day of travel, or before 6am the following day, can access the lounge when travelling between an international long haul (a oneworld international long haul flight is defined as an international flight marketed and operated by any oneworld carrier with a scheduled flight time longer than 5 hours) and an international short haul or domestic flight (and vice-versa).
  • Lounge access will be determined on the international long haul ticketed flight (either First of Business Class) regardless of the ticketed class of travel on the international short haul or domestic flight.
  • You must be prepared to show your boarding pass or itinerary showing travel in First or Business class on the international long haul flight, in order to access the lounge before your international short haul or domestic flight.

Hold on to your international BP and show it (along with your domestic BP) at the QF J lounge entrance. There are showers too.

Entry on a JQ flight number actually requires QFF status.

I’m sorry but I have no idea what “JQ” means.

JQ is the IATA airline designator for Jetstar, like QF for Qantas or AA for American.

Don't worry though - if you're flying Qantas both on the international and domestic leg, you will have access to the recently refurbished Qantas Melbourne Business lounge before your flight to Sydney.

Yes, the MEL lounge has showers. It's also been refurbished recently, as sbor90 noted.

Just to be clear, the 'J ( business) lounge' is the second, better tier of lounge compared to the Qantas Club I referred to above. At the top of the escalators leading up to the lounges, turn left!

Can anyone help the OP in respect of using the Qantas priority security lane after domestic re-check-in?

BTW @McNuss, here on AFF we have 'lounge meets', where you can nominate the day/ time of a flight you will be on, and request guesting into a higher class of lounge than you would be eligible for on your own. For instance, if you would like to visit the Qantas First lounge at SYD or MEL ( if you are flying Qantas/OneWorld internationally from either of those), then you can see if another AFFer with access will be there at the same day and can guest you in. If this is of interest I or someone else can post as link to the thread.

Once again, thank you all! I am interested to know more about the priority lane and also would be very interested in the possibility of guesting into the Qantas First lounge at MEL when I leave on the 15th. If someone could point me to that thread, I’d be grateful.

I can’t tell you how much I appreciate this!

I am interested to know more about the priority lane

Your AA plat / oneworld sapphire gets you priority security and boarding on the domestic Y legs.
