I currently have around 700,000 points and next year would like to do a trip to Hong Kong, Europe and America for 3 of us. Is it better to transfer my points to Singapore Airlines. I am not even sure if I could get out of Australia with my points, every time I look at flights there is never any availability. I am a platinum member and think I get a guarantee of reward flights. Is there a guide anywhere that gives you a rough idea of how many points it takes to get you to different places.

Thanks Matt, Yes I signed up as a top member so I could access all the ebooks but I'm still struggling and don't know who to ask.

I'd be happy to help you out, but I'm not sure exactly what your question is?

In terms of the number of points needed for a particular redemption, it depends on the airline and the distance travelled. You can check the number of points required on the Velocity website, and the distance for a particular route using Great Circle Mapper: Great Circle Mapper

Transferring to KrisFlyer could be worth it. It would depend on the route. I guess the main advantage is that Singapore Airlines partners with many more airlines than Virgin does, so there are more options for redeeming points. But the number of points required may be higher and fuel surcharges/taxes are also generally higher.

This website can be useful for calculating the number of points/miles needed for a particular redemption using different programs: Milez.biz -- The Global Frequent Flyer Miles Calculator and Comparison Tool

I believe Singapore Airlines offer round-the-world awards which could also be useful to you, but you'll probably have to call Singapore Airlines to learn more about that as there is not much information on the web. The rate is 240,000 KrisFlyer miles in business - which is equal to over 300,000 Velocity points, so you probably won't have enough points to cover 3 people anyway.

Award availability is always limited, but more so on certain routes & airlines than others. Singapore Airlines and Virgin redemptions to the USA are often difficult, but not impossible. Don't forget about partner airlines - they may be able to fill a few availability gaps.

I hope this answers your question. Let me know if I've missed the point.

It's probably worth asking, are you looking at Business or economy redemption's with your points. ?
