New Zealand Travel Bubble Announcement

Did I miss NZ opening up to Australia for NZ for quarantine free entry or is Adern just being somewhat two faced in wanting quarantine free travel into Australia as they are "well under control" despite having had a more recent infected person out and about than in Australia where things would seem to be better than "well under control".?

Jacinda Ardern 'disappointed' by Australia's move to suspend quarantine-free travel from New Zealand for 72 hours

New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern has said she is disappointed by Australia's decision to reinstate quarantine travel in the wake of the New Zealand's latest community COVID-19 case, adding that the situation is "well under control".

Amazing.

Media release

27 January 2021from NZ Ministry of Health.

Salient parts:

There are 4 new cases of COVID-19 in managed isolation and one historical case to report in New Zealand since our last media statement yesterday.

There have been no new cases in the community to report.

and

Update on Northland case

All potential close contacts of the previously reported Northland case have now returned negative test results.

The local public health unit has reviewed the status of a number of potential close contacts and has reclassified them as casual plus contacts.

A total of 212 staff from the managed isolation facility at Pullman Hotel have been tested, along with 192 guests currently in the facility. The vast majority of the test results received so far are negative, we are awaiting a small number of results. We’ll be able to give an updated number when available.

Of the 353 people who departed the managed isolation facility between 9 and 24 January, 255 people have returned negative tests.

Contact tracing staff are continuing to follow up with the remaining 98 recently departed guests to ensure they have their test. Today’s number of 353 differs from yesterday’s 357 as since then three people have left the country and since ben referred to their own health authorities while another record has been deleted as it was a double up.

Because of the Australian Federal Government's inability to work / control / influence the states, NZ now considering doing state by state deals.

What could possibly go wrong 😂

New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern mulls travel bubble arrangement with individual Australian states

New Zealand's Prime Minister says she is considering forming trans-Tasman travel bubbles directly with Australian states instead of a nationwide agreement.

What the hell 😂😂

Unless she intends her nation to cede independence and become the 7th Australian state, this feels like an embarrassing gaffe to me

Strange of her to whinge about bubble suspension being unfair because of the now 3 cases conneted with Pullman, all having been in the community for over a week before being detected when she has never made it a two way bubble.

If a handful of cases in NZ are ok, then why not the same number (adjusted for population difference) in Aus given the whole population of NZ is less than that of NSW.

Scomo would be very weak not to extend the bubble burst. But....

Fair enough. But interesting that she seemed to forget to order a vaccine in a timely manner... the population of New Zealand could have easily been vaccinated in a very short period, however the country looks set to be cutoff from the world for an extremely long period of time.
I think you missed the ‘likewise for the world’ part. There isn’t really such a need for NZ to vaccinate, the need is much stronger for those countries with much higher infection rates. The reaction of Scommo closing the border again suggests NZ and Oz aren’t that far apart on this view. And yes, if this continues it could be a long time for all of us.

NZ tops the list (Lowy Instiute) of best response to COVID, with Oz beating Latvia and Sri Lanka for 8th spot:

Paging scomo.

So NZ with 2290 cases and 25 deaths with a population of under 5 million rates above Taiwan with a population of 23 million+ yet 881 cases and 7 deaths.

Yes, NZ has done very well in their management of COVID.

Edit: The Lowy Institute has based the ranking on not just the cases, deaths and population. There’s more information:

There is only one indicator I can see that NZ leads and that is the number of tests.
However Taiwan has an excellent quarantine system which is strictly enforced. So they have kept the number of cases low.Of the 881 cases that have been positive there are only 71 community transmissions.

And, from the Lowy Institute article (36 week timeframe):

... An average of the rankings across the six indicators was normalised for each country to produce a score between 0 (worst performing) and 100 (best performing) on any given day in the 36 weeks that followed their hundredth confirmed case of COVID-19.

I cant see where the test rates are listed but I sincerely doubt that Rwanda (or Vietnam or Cyprus) has a test rate better than Australia - suspect their cases would be under reported due to lower testing rates given limitations of their health care systems.

And the 6 indicators were.
  • Confirmed cases
  • Confirmed deaths
  • Confirmed cases per million people
  • Confirmed deaths per million people
  • Confirmed cases as a proportion of tests
  • Tests per thousand people
So Taiwan aces the first 4 so only beaten as I said on testing. And only 71 community acquired cases.3 per million population.I know where I would like to have been if worried by Covid.

The Lowy Institute report was based on particular parameters. In any case, NZ has been a leader in COVID management. It is what it is, as someone once said.

And as someone else once said there are lies,d*** lies and statistics.

Reactions: DC3
Taiwan 31 cases per million population, only 3.3 per million local transmission.Deaths 0.28 per million.
NZ- 492 cases per million. deaths 5 per million.

Yeh must be fake.
