Morning fellow travellers. I received email last night that my (extensive) krisflyer points can now be redeemed for VA flights. The transfer of points between SQ/VA is still unavailable but can start booking trips w flights. It also notified me that all expiring points given 12 months extra. As Changi in lockdown and likely no overseas travel for a awhile think I might do some local redemptions .
I have not done deep dive yet about cancellation t and c’s etc.
thoughts??

There can be value in longer or connecting flights. They are redeemable online under partner flights.

I would redeem depending on VA or QF points available to you and your chances of using on SQ in a year or 3.

I’m heading towards redeem too.
I always consider points used = best use of points.
I can afford to travel o/seas , have gold status SQ and don’t use any other airline Because they are so good.
I realistically don’t see myself travelling O/seas till late 22 or early 23….. as will everyone else by which time $$ and not points will be the ultimate driver of seat availability. Might plan some nice interstate sojourns before then ….

It's not a new thing at all, just the first time KrisFlyer has actively promoted it to its Australian membership base.

This article from 2019 talks about some of the good uses:

Certainly an itinerary like ADL-BNE-CNS or HBA-MEL-HTI would be a good use of points. If booking a return ticket, you can also get a free stopover in one direction.

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

Would make it much more attractive to use SQ miles on VA if you could do so online as with most other SQ partners (or at least, through the app - doesn't let you search one Australian city to another Australian city).

It would also be more attractive if VA business class was lie-flat on long hauls. . . . ah well - @Mattg thanks for the tip on a stopover on return bookings - will look into it.

You must be doing something wrong here. Do a normal redemption search. When the results show, press the “other partner airlines“ button.

Yeah, most VA bookings are available online - although the SQ website doesn't recognise certain destinations and I think you still have to call if you want to add a stopover.

Sorry, should clarify, was commenting more on the app. Setting redeem flights to 'on', origin as BNE - can't then enter SYD or MEL into the destination box as it doesn't want to recognise it, and so can't run the search. Will have to try online, thanks. :)

Thanks
all good advice - will spend some time online now seeing what I come up with.. will gather all school holiday calendars first (to avoid these times).

Yeah how to go about booking Sydney to Melbourne return then?
