New US & UK Laptop/Tablet ban on up to 8 countries

Emirates aims to let passengers take their laptops past security gates at Dubai International Airport and collect the devices only before boarding as the world's largest international carrier seeks to minimise the impact of the electronics ban on routes to the US.
The state-owned carrier is planning to permit devices affected by the ban within the security perimeter to allow passengers, particularly those flying in premium seats, to use laptops and tablets until the last possible moment, it said in an email. The airline will then take the items for storage in the cargo hold until arrival.

This is going to make my trip report in July considerably harder :( not to mention I am not overly keen on checking laptop and camera gear.

I wonder what the chances of the ME3 coming up with Gate Check processes and allowing passengers to take electronic items for the first leg of a journey and then check then at the gate in DXB/AUH before the second leg into the US

I would suggest very unlikely. Maybe the ban will be dropped in some months... who knows. One just has no alternative but to plan for the contingency I suggest.

Someone (a US flyer for context) on Twitter suggested this wasn't that big a deal because he personally doesn't use technology on planes as he likes to just relax and enjoy his flight.
And also this just takes us back to a time 10 years ago when we didn't have laptops or tablets anyway. So no big deal.

Sigh.

That sounds like the simplistic take of my SIL. She doesn't shop on Sunday's and can't see why others need to.

It's not actually about using the laptop on the plane (take a book, drink DOM or Paradise) but having a functional laptop / tablet after you arrive for business.

I'm glad to see that Italy has decided not to adopt these silly rules, as they were not persuaded they were worthwhile (and perhaps also noticed the political aspects of the UK/US decisions).

That means I will now be taking a laptop on my trip next week. The only flight that was questionable was IST-FCO, but that problem seems to have gone away.

Does that mean you will be flying AZ?

Looks like Emirates have announced they will do exactly this, fingers crossed Etihad follow.

These are my flights ex-Australia:
CBR-BKK J (SQ)
BKK-DOH J (QR)
DOH-CAI F (QR)
CAI-IST Y (MS)
IST-FCO J (TK)
FCO-LHR Y (BA).

So you can see my concern with all that ME flying, but not an AZ flight in sight. Not all on one ticket either!

An interesting stat in the Emirates link

Our historical data shows that on Emirates’ US flights, 90% of passengers using our onboard mobile and Wi-Fi connectivity services do so via their smart phones. Only 6% connect via their laptops, and 4% via their tablets.

Electronics ban

Does anyone have any thoughts on if the ban is likely to be increased to include all flights not just those from middle eastern countries to U.K. Or USA. Our trip to Europe is six weeks away and a big part of travel is photography with DSLR camera and being able to read books on kindle.

If the ban ever extended to all flights, I would give up flying.

Has anyone seen an official statement regarding cameras?
