RJ alerts its pax with initial details of the new bans. I'm sure there is a lot more to come. 01490039504.jpg

It appears to be a temporary ban and involves flights[IMG] from 13 countries

    And from the KLM website

United States and Canada - electronic devices in hand baggage

For flights from Amsterdam Airport Schiphol, or from Paris – Charles de Gaulle to destinations in the United States or in Canada, all battery-operated electronic devices in hand baggage will undergo an extra check. At the gate, these devices will need to be taken out of their sleeves or covers, be switched on and be shown to be operative.

Not sure of the above is new or not

I am reading that it affects 13 *airports* in the ME/Africa rather than countries. No US carriers affected. Order from DHS who are still refusing to comment. Carriers have 96 hrs to implement (rather than earlier reports that the ban would only last 96 hrs).

Commentary that this may put a lot of Lithium Ion batteries into the hold which would normally be in the cabin ie. not a great idea.

What on earth? This "policy" does not make any sense at all. What is the reasoning behind it?

It makes it easier for the thieves to get their hand on them.

Didn't you hear there is a new Sheriff in town? And he has surrounded himself with the 'Most Intelligent Cabinet in History'! Clearly evident

Response to intelligence of a credible threat?

I guess that's possible. Does something that someone heard on Fox News count as a credible threat?

    (I'm only speculating...)

Looks like DOH is included (I read on the BBC). Checking in a laptop kind of defeats HLO travel...

Seems like the US admin has people working in baggage services who are about to reap a bounty in stolen electronic devices from checked luggage. No one in their right mind puts laptops, tablets etc with confidential and private information in checked luggage. Great boom for security firms selling whole device encryption.

Why don't Arab countries Boing aircraft with lithium batteries from entering their airspace.

    Madness.

Well this seems a more reasoned article rather than some of the stupid speculation that is out there-

So all those valuable electronics in checked-in luggage.

Thieves will be rejoicing! Trump has now found a whole new segment to vote him back in next time.

re: New US & UK Laptop/Tablet ban on up to 8 countries

This is not the first time passengers are forced to check in all their electronic devices. I remember flying to LHR from North America in August 2006 and we were allowed only a ziploc bag with a toothbrush and passport in the cabin. Everything else had to be checked in. This lasted for 3 days if I remember correctly. This is also when the ban on liquids started, initially a total ban and a few days later the magical 100 mL limit became the standard to this day.
Let's see how long this lasts. I'm surprised that AUH is mentioned since they provide preclearance to the US.

The WaPo agrees. It's not a security thing, it's something to disadvantage the subsidised airlines of the ME.

Posted in another thread ..... looks like the UK are bringing in something similar as well ... one would assume BA QF would also be affected
