Sunshine Coast Airport has announced the start of flights from the SC to Cairns -

We’re going troppo – fly Sunshine Coast to Cairns!

We’re proud to partner with the Queensland Government and Alliance Airlines to launch, for the first time in our history, a new service to Cairns. It’s been a destination locals have long called for and we’re pleased to say we’ve delivered! From 17 July, you can fly three services per week, with flights departing and returning on Friday, Sunday and Monday. Alliance Airlines launch fares are on sale now and start at $125 one-way including taxes. All fares are inclusive of 20kg free checked baggage. To book, visit AllianceAirlines.com.au

I am guessing this might have something to do with aircraft utilization/positioning for Alliance F100s that do some RPT and a lot of charter resource work?

An interesting route nevertheless, maybe just state government vote buying for electorates badly affected by the Covid-19/tourism downturn and state border restrictions?

Mind you there's been more MCY-CNS traffic lately than usual because SCUH has been sending scientific staff to CNS to cover after the covid scares up there!
