2C64EA90-FDC9-4261-A91D-91CA904C648D.jpegI received a schedule change email today for QF2.
It’s now departing LHR 09.50 and arrives SYD 19.25
The inbound QF1 arrives at 06.15

Upon looking at the other flagship routes QF11 is now a night time departure. It’s presumably the same aircraft as inbound QF2.
The schedules are updated until the end of March.

QF must think that QFi is resuming in Dec as they have planned.
Fingers crossed

That looks like the old QF32 timings? That was so much better than the red eyes (Ex-SIN).

That makes inbound and outbound connections impractical for QF2 :(
I hope this won't extend post March, I have a booking with this flight in May, and this screw my connections.

The 11 is flirting with the curfew a little bit there..... Terrible for US East Coast travellers.

And yup, looks like the old QF32 timing, which was perfect if your final destination was Sydney and you struggle to sleep on planes.

At the end of the day, 787 to LHR in Y/Y+ - no thanks!

a morning departure out of LHR is not the greatest imo. That's the sector most would want to sleep on - and it means connections from BA would be VERY limited specially from Europe. You'd have to come in the night before I imagine. Not terribly business friendly either as you would effectively waste a night in London after working.

The old timings had you leave around 9pm IIRC so perfect to finish work or whatever and zip off to LHR at the end of peak traffic, meal or whatever in lounge and off for a good kip on the flight to SIN.

I expect this is about utilisation AND avoiding long ground time at LHR - if the 787 comes in early morning it pretty much turns right away (perhaps swaps with inbound from QF9 perhaps) and is off.

I've done both morning departures on longhaul (eg: MH LHR-KIL and SQ LHR-SIN) and evening (QF2 LHR/SIN or LHR/DXB) and EK also to DXB and far preferred the evening departures by a country mile. That's just me though.

from an ex-SIN point of view - again connections from Asia are very limited into this flight. QF probably does not care too much as it's more interested in traffic out of LHR, but the later timings were possibly better for connections or even origin SIN flyers.

We shall see how it goes (when it goes :) )

What's interesting is that QF have zeroed out inventory between SYD-SIN and SIN-LHR, leaving only inventory for the through journey, SYD-LHR and LHR-SYD, which leads me to think it is possible they are flirting with an alternative stopover for QF1/2 and that it may not be Singapore after all.

There is still inventory on the QF81/82, which terminates/originates in Singapore.

It is possible that Qantas are only concentrating on origin and destination, not as though you will come off one flight and connect to Brisbane.

Nobody will be connecting Interstate given that domestic borders are closed.
It’s a non-issue until they are.

The SYD-LAX, MEL-LAX and SYD-SFO timings were pushed back to late evening departures when Qantas published its post-18 December schedule last month, and SYD-DFW has been pushed back to a 17:10 departure. However at this stage they are due to revert back to the old timings in late March 2022 (this could change).

The QF2 schedule change is new. It results in much better aircraft utilisation because that 787 can arrive into SYD at 19:25 then fly to LAX at 22:25. With the new LHR-SYD and SYD-LAX schedules, Qantas can operate daily SYD-LAX and SYD-SIN-LHR flights with four 787 frames instead of five. This does however reduce a lot of slack in the schedule in case things go wrong. Expect delays.

I personally much prefer that QF2 timing over the ~9pm departure from LHR if travelling to SYD. Great if you're just flying from SIN to SYD as well because QF2 ex SIN becomes an 8.30am departure. Not so great if you're travelling LHR-SIN only.

Although, I find it curious that Qantas is not currently selling any seats on the standalone LHR-SIN or SIN-SYD sectors of QF2. Perhaps they're expecting they might not be able to pick up/drop off pax in SIN, or might need to re-route the flight via DRW?

I also wonder where the 9.25am departure slot at LHR came from?

I was able to cope with SIN-SYD red eye from LHR from stopping 24 hours in Singapore in between legs but obviously a daytime SIN-SYD leg would be better.

Was Qantas leasing it to BA all this time?
From what I can recall:

Looking at flights in March and including a LHR-SIN leg. Qantas are only offering EK metal at the moment via DXB, would prefer a direct flight...

The LHR-SIN flights are loaded in the system but zeroed out, i.e. Qantas isn't currently selling seats on this leg. You have to book LHR-SYD to get on QF2.

I expect things will change once there is more clarity around what flights will run, when and via where. I'd have another look in 2-3 weeks.

Please QF when you restart PER go back to the old QF72 timings.
QF 72 SIN 09:00 PER 14:35

The overnight in SIN from anywhere else would be better than arriving in PER later than 1900.

Oh to be wandering
Fred

Could be a bit of a wait :)

I am just hoping they use something bigger than a 737 when they do restart!

Agree...always preferred a day flight out of Singapore back to Oz. Something to look forward to next year.

Those late departures to LAX from MEL and SYD making connecting from PER so much better! No more red-eye or stupidly early PER departure. Of course, not an issue given PER is in DPRWA and hence can't do much :)
