To do this, I’m planning to switch from buying cinema gift vouchers to buying an actual movie ticket.

I tried this once but won't do so again. The only way to use its benefits is to rely on staff which then put a lot of things outside my control - staff competency, exchange rates, access to prices showing online vs call centre.

No, as above - there’s a DIY option which has worked just fine when I’ve had to change my session date and movie more than 24 hrs after paying for the initial movie ticket.

Obviously, don’t take the cash refund option and proceed from there.

There are none at this point, vouchers are the gold standard. The only exception being a rewarding ticket as you can't get a rewards voucher.

I've done a few round the world screenings now with double the benefits.

I once bought a viewing to a local movie then I was sick so had to change it to a movie credit. An international blockbuster was announced so when changing the credit to the new international screening, it was very messy and took a few phone calls to get it done but even after the booking was confirmed to the international screening, I was unable to upgrade to Gold Class on any of the flights.

This has happened a couple of times but I always got the credits so was ultimately worth it. Now, I keep my domestic and international movie bookings separate so that I can make the relevant changes myself.

Which is why I have usually bought refundable movie tickets. But you do have to call the box office if you want to change the cinema you will attend.

Technically, you end up with a less restrictive movie voucher.

At the risk of coining a brand new analogy (sorry, not sorry ), straight out movie vouchers are basically like those ones that have "No Free Ticket" printed on them whereby there are plenty of opportunities to use them, but there are some restricted sessions (e.g. you can't use it to watch a blockbuster that commences screening at an overseas cinema venue). The DIY option on the other hand has no such restrictions.

Yes that is true, but for the medium term foreseeable future I will have QF flights so they won't ever be actually lost money.

Yes, I exchanged my movie voucher for a Gold Class screening, cancelled expecting a refund as the website says (whoops!) but I just now have another more restrictive credit. Lesson learned.

No it won't. Tried multicity but system wouldn't let me. But if I did Mel-Bne-Cns, Cns-Bne-Syd as multicity booking, it will allow the 45 min transit in Cns...and I have to get back to Syd anyway...hmmm...

Booked Mel-Bne-Cns,Cns-Bne-Syd on one PNR using multicity to get some protection. Checking some flight apps it is the same aircraft in and out of Cns...45 mins on ground in Cns

Can someone please clarify this? I thought for instance QF8136 operated by emirates from venice to dubai would count for double status? And also QF8412 dbx - syd. etc

Travel agent is correct, it has to be operated by Qantas or one of their various subsidiaries (network aviation, alliance, sunstate, national jet etc)

Sorry to say that your agent is correct. You only get DSC on flights actually operated by QF on their own metal. You can get creative though eg you can go DXB-SIN on EK and then SIN-SYD on QF. The QF leg will get DSC. We do this semi regularly to visit family in the UAE. It’s not direct, but you get at least a decent slice of DSC.
