That is why I change before take-off and when I wake up prior to landing :D

I only change after take-off just in case we have to evacuate. Same with shoes, always leave them tied until cruising.

So any idea when an asian routing might be upgraded.
I am via SIN & BKK in Dec & Jan which I assume are highly unlikely but planning a midyear trip that i will prob do on BA as I like their J sleepers.

So anyone have any "best seat" recommendations on the new config?

Flying to LA in March and from the seat selections looks like it will be the new config.

In economy :)

I can see how they have made room for the longer beds - by removing toliets! If you look at the seat maps on the other 747 aircraft, there used to be 4 toilets in the same areas on the main deck and 2 on the upper-deck. Now only 2 dunnies for 40 JC on the main deck and only 1 for the upper-deck  Gonna take a while for everyone to change into their PJ's after take off! And not to mentioned the before landing change back rush at the other end ;)

I think the number of people who change into pj's to/from the US depends which direction you're travelling in. I noticed that when flyhing MEL/LAX, due to a lunch time departure hardly any people were in PJ's towards the end of the flight. I did see one middle aged guy wearing them very early which I thought looked a bit odd as it was daylight outside, but apart from him I only saw a couple of kids wearing them when they went to change back into normal clothes prior to our arrival into LAX.

A couple of years ago on the SFO/SYD flight due to the 2230 ish departure, once the seatbelt sign was off every man & his dog changed into them except us prompting SO to comment that it looked like the cabin had been taken over by an army of grey smurfs. He now refers to the PJ's as his 'Rocky Balboa suit'.

Check out the article on ausbt.com.au from a week ago that outlined the best business class seats.

Can anyone suggest good economy seating in the new 747 config?

Thanks

I travelled with SO on QF7 SYD/DFW in May & we had two seats together on the side towards the back of aircraft so I would recommend the 2nd row of two eg if the first row of two is 69 I would pick 70 as you will be able to stretch out your legs into the space in front.

Any status pax who is silver or above should be able to select these seats at no cost.

I wouldn't fork out $180 pp one way for the exit row but that is up to the individual to decide.

any updates on whether all 747-400's have been trough the mill? Travelling QF128 next week, was spotting 11A upperdeck anyone with experience in this seat

Not all 747s are getting the treatment, all the ERs are done as is one non ER, with two to go, there are still 11 in the fleet that wont change.

Hate the new layout. Lack of toilets in J, no room for duty free so don't ask, seats are not quite horizontal as advertised and still hard, entertainment system tends to pause every now and then (but at least it works). Of all the seats though 5b and 5j are best if travelling alone, lots of storage, still see out the window and no one next to you. Not happy though, flight on Monday my favourite seats are taken. When I have the choice, always travel back from Santiago over night with LAN, find it much more comfortable for sleeping.

I'm with you. I've tried the refurb product twice and have gone fully over to LAN for my Santiago trip in September. The LAN cabin is nicer and the food out of Santiago far superior. LAN wine is better than the qf j offer (but not F)?

Irony is that if it was the non refurb plane I'd have stuck with qf to fly in F

W usually fly QF94 back to OZ but due to work just flew in on QF16 on what I am assuming is not the new layout as the seats in the the nose were not Skybeds. First time I have ever sat in the nose of a 747. If these were the old first class seats then I am somewhat disappointed. The seats were quite firm and the power socket in an odd position (once you find it). To top it off the IFE didn't work in the first seat I sat in (i wasn't alone with this problem) and in the second seat the touch screen wasn't functioning correctly either (at least the remote worked). So if this was first class good to know I didn't really miss anything in the past seat wise.

On another note the inflight service was excellent and I have to commend Brisbane airport for how quickly the get the bags out. Beats Tullamarine by miles.

You had OJT which is due for a conversion and will be one of the last ones to get it.

I've never known the older IFE (on the 333's and un-refurbed 747's) to have touch screens?

You definitely had the 'old' first class seats, it was not the 'new layout'.

Remember, those First seats are a design from the 90's - originally the IFE was in the form of choices from a Hi8 tape library, Skyshow or the 3hr loop video that was available to Business class. Until Skybed's were introduced, business had 'dreamtime' seats which are not lay flat; the First seats representing a definite step up.

These First Seats have been refurbished/updated a few times over the last decade and a half including the removal of "Empower", the replacement of the tape players, installation of AVOD touch screens etc.

The 744's in First and Business have had touch screens for at least 8 years - see above re Hi8 tape libraries from the 90's and updates..

We did the 747 refurbed j BNE/LAX with new seat/bed/avod on 13th Aug. seats very comfortable and service from senior FA's as good as one could ask for, food, wine A1, if this is as good as DFW/BNE will be very happy.

Footnoe: LaX still a dump (wake up America) later fihgts via SfO perfect.

We have just obtained Classic Award seats for QF6 - Singapore-Sydney next August (2013). It seems to be the refurbished 747 as there are Business/PE/Economy. We are in Row 16A and B - Business, so I take it these are the prime seats? They appear as Exit Row on the map. (Husband is Gold and hovering towards Platinum)
