New 'Low Cost' Terminal for Perth

It rains every day in Perth during the winter. Ask the fly in/out guys how much they like the winter walk to their planes! Until the Airport can get the LCCs to move Qantas is stuck in their wee space.

Conversely I've not seen in rain in the summer months ever. Ever seen the Perth Test lose time to rain?
Maybe they could set up a summer terminal! Tents, carpets, camels - the whole Bedouin experience.

I think the airport is mainly hoping Tiger/JQ and all the small carriers like Skywest will move and that will free up enough room for QF to expand.

A better idea would be to build an entire new terminal holding everyone including international.

I just read the master plan and its at odds with what as been reported in the 'West" , no surprise there. Terminal WA is mainly for LCC and regional flights, and is only designed to support Code C and smaller, and that the existing terminals will be developed to support the remaining "airlines" until the new terminal is finalised for all in 2020:

"
Further investments will be made in the existing two
Domestic Terminals to ensure that growth of the remaining
domestic airlines can continue and levels of customer
service improved. The levels of customer service in the
existing two Domestic Terminals will be significantly
enhanced by the combined effect of the works being
undertaken and planned in the two terminals and the
reduced level of activity which will occur when some of
the airlines relocate to the new terminal in 2011.

The final stages of consolidation of all larger aircraft RPT
services are expected to centre on a new terminal facility
that incorporates the existing International Terminal."

There is plenty of room for both DJ and QF if the regional flights move.

That was my thought, move the little regional flights that use stairs anyway and free up the room for the big 2.

And then there's the minor issue (call it PITA) of getting from Dom to Int if you're connecting, which no-one seems to care about.

Having done it many times (and not QF to QF, so a cost of $8-25), I think the whole idea stinks.

How many airports in the rest of the world do you know that charge at least $8 to transfer from one terminal to another on the same patch of earth? Definitely "third world" ripoff in Australia. An absolute disgrace!

BNE and SYD both charge $5 and the distance is probably half that of PER if you are using the train, in BNE after hours the bus transfer is $8 too.

I agree 100%, it is a terrible option to transfer in PER from Dom/Int. Even QF to QF where you don't pay it still is a worse than horrible option ! Sadly from SIN when the boom times happened last year that was often the only reasonable priced flights to MEL.

(however QF10 direct once again it if for me today :) )

Ah yes, but it's still Australia, the airport ripoff capital of the world IMHO.

I don't think distance, when it comes to charging for inter-terminal transfers at the same airport, is all that relevant (but poor airport design, allied with greedy, unregulated private operators certainly are).

If the Kiwi's can do a free Int-Dom bus shuttle at AKL (which is also privatised), why can't SYD, BNE, PER do it too. OK, I do know the answer....

I totally agree, just wanted to point out that Perth is not alone in being ripped off, at least Darwin, Melbourne and Adelaide dont have the issue. I almost missed a connection to Brisbane from Singapore in Perth owing to the bus frequency being somewhat infrequent, and that was free!
