New long haul mattress?

While I was on the phone to the Velocity CS team earlier, I mentioned the rumour of new seats being installed and the response was, "Why would they do that. They just got new memory foam mattresses." (she said it nicely/with a smile).
I was talking to FA on Adelaide to Brisbane yesterday regarding them finally getting rid of the old Emirates birds, and she stated that she normally flys on the A330's and was happy to see XFA and XFB being retired. She went on to say that the 777's were getting new Business Class Seating commencing in March and after they are completed, they will be putting the same seats into all of the A330's for standardisation of the product. Obviously still a rumour until we hear otherwise, but there is obviously something happening!

From info I've heard from friends who are VA crew, it seems they are definitely upgrading the seats, to ensure that the product in J class is the same on every 777 and 330. The mattress I assume however will be able to be used on the new seats whenever they should arrive.

Just flew MEL-LAX and got to experience the new J class mattress. I must say it was a big improvement over what was previously used and no longer was able to feel the gaps in the seat. Look forward to my return flight LAX-SYD next week.

I too got the impression from the crew that new seats are on their way.

Guess I'll be trying it out in October as well. The extra padding will be nice under the hip as I'm a side sleeper mostly.

I tried it in biz class on an lax Sydney
definite improvement in comfort for sure.
its a struggle for the crew as they are bulky
only pain in biz class is all these fancy people that clog the loos donning and removing pyjamas!!!

Row 5 has a curtain and a bit of extra room than the loos ;)

Im travelling with my mum to LAX in a few weeks and I notice there are two adjacent row 5 seats on the left of the plane. Are all row 5 seats curtained off? Do you think this is a better option then our current 1H and K seats?

Row 5 can be sectioned off into 3 separate zones ( 5A and C // DFG // H K) so if for example G and H are available , you will be separated by the curtain.

I've not tried Row 5 because it is at the end of the service (which starts at Row 1) and the noise from people like me. At the bar!

I regularly fly in row 5 and have never had any issues about it being "at the end of the service", nor have I had any major issues with noise coming from the bar.

Getting back on topic, I flew into Sydney on VA2 today and had a very comfortable sleep using the new mattresses. My only gripe is that for a pair of seats, the rolle3d up mattress and duvet occupy nearly a third of the space of the overhead lockers on the side of the plane severely restricting passenger storage space. Let's hope with the introduction of new seating next year, this issue will go away. It was suggested to me that the seating will be of a "herring-bone" nature with the elimination of the middle seat in the middle row...we'll just have to wait and see.

When I told hubby about the new seats, he was wondering if row 5 will remain.

Its annoying when you realise how much is not on the internet when you want to snoop. A seat map or new seat design would be welcomed so waiting patiently and hoping our April trip will be in the new config.

we are flying syd-lax on saturday..row 5, F,G.....I am finding it hard to find info/pics/ trip reports of this particular row.....any help would be greatly appreciated...I do love upgrades :)

I flew 5G BNE LAX last month and 5H LAX MEL return. Row 5 is outstanding even if traveling alone. I found it very conducive to sleep as it's much darker after meal services. The awkwardness of being in a tight space with strangers (even with the curtain out) was very low. Raise the privacy partition and away you go.
I didn't have any issues with noise from the bar despite there being a fair few pax up taking advantage of it. When I'd get up to go for a stretch and walk up the front, the main J cabin was so bright from people with screens out reading or watching movies it felt (literally) like night and day.

Cant wait for the new J seat though. Hoping it'll be fitted by April when I'm planning my next trip...

the new product will be announced very soon .... appears to be something like CX J from the news reports

so just returned from trip...did bus syd-lax..row 5..middle seat...
what a pain it is to get in and out when beds are made and people are asleep.
but apart from that, great product...M sized pj's are large so get a smaller size...baramundi the best ever...wine selection great...service A+...very friendly and easy going flight crew.
only down side re mattresses is they take up ALL THE OVERHEAD SPACE....crazy

lovely product...flew PE coming home, row 10, video screen broken, long flight.

You've pretty much summed it up with the current situation but at least we know that towards the end of next year the 777's will have the new business class seating which will eliminate the middle seat issue and hopefully relieve overhead locker space.

Recently flew J to SYD->LAX, 5A.

Loved the Lamb cutlets, enjoyed the cheeseplate. I found the mattress quite nice, and didn't really have a problem climbing over to the aisle with the bulkhead. Didn't have any issues with overhead storage either.

IFE was good, although I still wish VA had a larger selection of movies like Emirates or SIA

Enjoyed the bar being just behind a curtain :)

(excuse the coughpy photo quality)

the hubby LOVED the lamb, said it was awesome....the bar also was a great feature and really in row 5 we didn't have any noise issues...yep, i agree that the IFE was a tad shallow re selections. The one thing that was annoying was the tray tables seem to sag a fair bit, making it difficult to cut food and stop glasses sliding towards the left.

I hope the Sydney salt and pepper shakers stay after the refit. So cute.
