I renewed recently and I can confirm that there aren't many serial numbers left in the N-series which started about 5 years ago, with the dark blue, almost black, cover and silver crest.
Rumour has it that the blue will be more, well, blue! and the gold crest is coming back along with the word Australia...since many foreign officials don't recognise our coat of arms ...but its just a rumour, amazing what you pick up around the traps in Canberra
