New Amex statement credits

When you say “airline Amex transactions”, are you referring to booking with Amex travel? If so, I wouldn’t be surprised if they include that level of detail. But booking direct with Virgin Australia on their website has never yielded that level of detail for me.

Perhaps the work around to capture this rebate benefit is to only use a personal and not corporate/business Amex then.

I have just checked back on Virgin bookings all made on my Velocity Escape card over the past few months. None show any detail. Paid bookings just have a narrative of VIRGIN AUSTRALIA 994010 WINTON. FF bookings have a narrative of VIRGIN AUSTRALIA 994012 BAMAGA.

I have made very few Qantas bookings recently but the narrative is always QANTAS Airw Mascot AU.

In all cases no further detail by clicking on the transaction online.

I think the difference may be between a Platinum charge card and a credit card. I've noticed that level of detail started appearing when I started using a charge card, but I don't recall ever seeing it on my credit cards.

Booked direct with VA, though every airline has similar detail. Funnily enough, the Amex travel bookings actually don't show this. This is a personal platinum card so maybe that's why it shows up, but I suspect that Amex would differentiate it in the background.

My recent QF bookings showing full details are on my small business CC. As an aside, it even split one payment into two line items one for each PAX. I had a conniption thinking it would no longer trigger a QF cash back but fortunately the total payment amount counted.

The VA offer is on my personal Gold CC - which I haven’t used booking QF for a while but pretty sure it had some details. Guess I’ll find out if I get around to using the VA offer.

Has anyone tried to see if the Virgin credit works for taxes on reward flights?
If you are booking an award flight anyway then you have nothing to lose by trying.
Ts&Cs specifically exclude reward seats but report back if you’re booking anyway!
  • Payments made towards selection of seats, reward seats or charter flights are not eligible for the offer. Flights operated by codeshare partners are not eligible for the offer.
  • Payments for flight upgrades or other flight extras/ancillaries are not valid for the offer.

Airline Amex transactions actually show the route, name and ticket number on the statement, so it’s quite possible they could in fact distinguish between a flight purchase and something else.

I've had this over the years on the Charge cards (Personal and Corporate). Not had that level of detail on my credit cards, although I suspect Amex receive it.

Intriguing. Personally I’ve never seen that.

Reviewing the last 12 months of my Vrigin domestic and International bookings made using my Amex, every transaction appears with Merchant name “Virgin Australia 994010 Winton”.

There is no route, name or transaction cost number anywhere to be seen, even when I click into the transaction go further detail.
My flight bookings made on my USD Amex Gold have all this extra info, but I haven't noticed it on bookings made in AUD on my Plat (although, I usually only use the Plat for Amex Travel, since otherwise the bonus airline category on the Gold is more lucrative for direct airline bookings).

Is there a way to split a Virgin Australia direct booking over multiple Amexes? Like, for instance, if I had a ~$900 one-way itinerary to book and then likely more smaller bookings in the next month, totalling more than $1350, I'd like to spend $675 on one card for the Amex Offer, then switch over to the next card.

I have the Qantas Business (QBR) Amex and it shows route, name and ticket number for QF, VA, SQ tickets.
Has the PNR for VA tickets.
For some QF tickets it even shows "price ex GST" - I think this is for direct revenue bookings only.
For SQ it was an award booking but showed the revenue class - that is the only inaccuracy.
Has the ABN of the merchant, too.

Do you have a personal or business card?

They're charged by different mobs so I think they'll be able to tell. The full-fare ones are by Winton, and the Rewards Seats are by Bamaga (so my Amex statement says)
