New amaysim roaming plans April 2023

I’ve had a prepaid amaysim plan for a while now and was a little nervous when they advised they were introducing new roaming plans this month.
365 day expiry and 90 countries covered and reasonable costs for casual, minimal use.
I’ve used the Airalo esim in UK but the convenience of roaming with my own number.

Hardly any data, $70 for 5GB seems expensive. Can usually get a UK 3 sim that gives you 15GB for about 60.

Pretty good deal for people like me who don't really use a lot of data while travelling overseas. 5GB would easily cover unless I went somewhere that had no wifi.

I actually tried to change my Optus plan to their $79 month plan with 5GB/month roaming data and they refused (new customers only), now I'm glad they did because this looks like a better option.

I was also looking at Felix but Amaysim covers more countries (90 compared to 40). Also works out cheaper from a comparison on another thread:

assuming away for 4mths/yr, using 2.5-3GB/mth:

I'm actually in the US at the moment roaming with Optus and want to port ASAP, might possibly work with eSIM but seems high risk and I should wait until I'm back in Australia.

I got worried when they sent this out, because I use an Amaysim e-SIM in the US to recieve 2FA SMS for Australian services (i.e. banks) and there's no cost to receive messages ($5 AYG credit lasts 365 days and mine has never gone down). The FAQ doesn't mention recieving SMS will now require a roaming pack, only sending, so it remains to be seen whether this will still work for me. Annoying if I have to buy a new service or god forbid, port my number again.

Yes, given Optus is/was 4GB per month on the $50 pm plan (for now).

GiffGaff does 20GB (including upto 5GB roaming in Europe, plus calls/SMS) for £10.

Did you trying changing plans online / in-app?

The “new customers only” might refer to the QFF points component?

I asked via the in-app chat. The agent said no and then tried to sell me a different plan.

If you try to signup on the website it prevents you from continuing if you select existing Optus postpaid customer and keeping your number. I think you could easily port to prepaid and then port back in to this plan, but I'm honestly done with Optus now it's not worth the hassle.

I was reasonably impressed by the offering! I receive the occasional text overseas, mostly from banks. Also need to send the occasional text, back to banks! So the 50/50 and 1GB pack will be ideal for me… $25. There have been times when being able to send a couple more texts would have been useful, and with the data I can now book ubers or similar without needing to be tied to wifi at the airport.

So all-round not too bad! For me at least.

Yes, I'm an Amaysim pre-paid customer (as well as Optus post-paid) and thought this was a reasonable offer.

However, I probably won't use it, as I use a 3-UK add-on while travelling o'seas (except where they don't cover the country, in which case I get an Optus pass for the odd day).

But who knows how it might develop?

Still receiving Au SMS internationally just having an Amaysim sim w/ PAYG credit... for now.

Just got this from Amaysim via email:

“Welcome to United Kingdom!

You've activated your mobile service overseas with International Roaming. You currently don't have a product that supports roaming, so will only be able to receive incoming SMS’ while overseas.

To make and receive calls, send SMS and use data whilst overseas head to the amaysim app to check out our International Roaming options.”

Receiving SMS still FoC

Excellent! Thanks for the data point!

My main priority (YMMV) is convenience over everything else.
I agree, and that's why I always take two phones with me on any trip.

My Optus post paid to receive calls and SMS from Australia, and my Three-UK (which I've had for many years) for in-country data and voice use as needed.

I have an amaysim yearly plan and received the email also. Looks good.

On our trip last month to New Zealand we purchased a Sims corner sim for $25. It worked well but I think I will try the Amaysim deal next.

I get often get survey asking me whether ‘this bank’ or ‘this retailer’ is a ‘brand you can trust’. I actually have no emotion when asked.

But with amaysim it would actually be a brand I could say ‘yes’. They always have good offers, and they never seem out the screw the customer. I’m on a grandfathered $10 plan, and with that I’m now getting 4GB of data a month - started out as 1GB, then increased to 2GB… all free - and now unused data rolled over each month. I’m almost up to 60GB saved.

Pretty impressive.

So I trust these offers are actually something which might be good!

100% agree they have had some great offers, and I while I have not yet given up on them..... I was very disappointed to find after I ported all my plans to them (x8) and was about to set off on two months of cruising, they gave 3 weeks' notice, that with the introduction of the new plans, they no longer will be supporting roaming on cruise ships...... so I have just had to port my first two plans back out from them. :(

Oh no!

Just ported my number across to Amaysim with esim, was really fast - kicked it off on Good Friday and this morning all done! If you're thinking of doing the same I've posted a 'refer a friend' link in the referrals forum where you and I would both get a $10 credit, which makes the new roaming plan better value.

or even more for less:

afaik, for all providers/networks, it's free to receive an SMS, but not a call

even more convenient to have one dual-e/sim phone? :)
