In the great Queensland tradition of build it and they will come:

ONE of Queensland's wealthiest families has come up with a dramatic solution to Brisbane Airport's woes - they are building their own airport.
The Toowoomba-based Wagners - who own a construction, infrastructure and engineering empire - have started work on the $100 million-plus Wellcamp Airport on the inland city's western outskirts.

I would rather go around in circles for 90 minutes than take the drive to Toowoomba to catch a plane, for some reason that drive just annoys me.

There's a name I haven't heard in ages, stayed there a couple of times back in its heyday. If my old memory isn't fading I had a great time and enjoyed it a lot.

Feel sorry for those that bought houses there, I stayed there too and really enjoyed it, it was good because it was away from everything but also why it failed, closed last year:

Just connect on Skytrans!

Seeing as they already fly there from BNE, and I thought to SYD too? Why aren't they just expanding existing facilities?

Hmm, worlds oldest Dash 8s and a schedule not suited for day trips are two reasons!

Wow, I wonder what it is used for now or is it just abandoned?

I'll never forget flying into PPP, was one of about 3 pax on the plane. maybe you were one of them ;)

Shame really, as you say it was a great place.

Just had a look on Google and can see why they're not expanding existing facilities, it's a bit close to the HWY :p

I wonder if part of their reasoning behind building a new airport is (hopefully) acquiring the land from the old airport, as it looks like good real estate.

Perhaps times have changed, my last flights in and out of PPP were full.

It was extended about as much as possible after the 2001 loss of a king air.

Also sounds like an opportunity for high(er) speed rail between airport-Towoomba-Brisbane. Another opportunity for construction profits ..err projects.

Given the price of tickets from BNE to the city, it might also be less expensive to the "flying public"

I'd rather fly via SYD, or MEL, or ... heck, ADL then go through Toowoomba! That place is the armpit of QLD I swear (and I've lived in a heck of a lot of QLD!!).

Lol. Brisbane west. ;)
But good on them. Certainly showing up Brisbane Airport for the bunch of clowns that they are.

$100m for an airport of that size doesn't sit right with me. I think we might hear its true cost in time. But overall I think its a positive thing, and I hope it makes the Wagner family a decent return. If they can somehow secure a direct connect to BNE then their fortunes will improve significantly, just think LCC wanting to fly into QLD.

When you own the equipment and employ the labour etc directly, it is certainly possible... Maybe a bit like Jetstar making huge amounts of money while Qantas pays the bills... But who knows.
