Only days after the AAdvantage & Dividend Miles programs merged, American is back with a great bonus on buying miles.

[h=1]Up to a 60% bonus when you buy miles[/h]Through April 30, 2015, American AAdvantage is offering up to 60,000 AAdvantage bonus miles when you buy miles.

If you max out this promotion and purchase 100,000 miles then you’d earn a total of 160,000 AAdvantage miles at a cost of $3,201.25. That’s a cost of 2.0 cents per AAdvantage mile.

probably the best price since USDM gave another 10% discount during christmas 2014 to bring their price down to 1.88c/mile

Is it good for giving miles a new lease of life - if so, just the sweet spot for a minimum purchase as I don't really need many more.

I think your figures are a bit rubbery. coolkid.
$US2950 for 160,000 miles is about $AUD3880 or 2.4c per AAdv. mile.

Sorry, I thought this was Australian FF where we quote the AUD (aka apples vs apples).
True, I didn't add the tax etc but when you do the figures look even less appealing - the taxes bring the cost up to $AUD4210 - or 2.6c per AA mile.

It may well be an Australian group but we are talking about AMERICAN airlines. I dont see it being unreasonable to talk in usd since thats the currency you are required to pay in.

The promo isn't too bad for flights to Europe and to Asia (based on CX redemptions, QF is a bit hard to find).

Note AA accounts must now be 30 days or older in order to purchase miles. Effectively meaning those just joining at the start of a promo will likely miss out.

At whatever cost that maybe to Australians.

In any case still reasonable value when you compare the points/miles cost of a QFF MEL-AKL business class award at 36k against AAdvantage at 17.5k.

the price you'd pay for the miles will be fixed in USD... i.e. not changing daily with the forex rate. while the rate change may only be minuscule, when paying a couple of thousand USD/AUD then the difference will be noticeable so not much point posting an ever-changing price per mile in AUD

and like trixy pointed out 2950 USD is price of 100,000 miles, taxes of 221.25 USD, processing charge of 30 USD . total 3201.25 USD = 4196 AUD as per today.
yesterday it would've been ~4129 AUD hence not posting in AUD.

for comparison,

Pricing in USD makes sense to me otherwise you have no point of comparison as currency fluctuates. For example I always research overseas hotels in their local currency. Sure we could put the AUD conversion in brackets but I'd hope anyone undertaking this exercise would be smart enough to understand that pricing is based on USD.

There doesn't seem to me to be much point posting in AUD when that amount is in constant flux.

thanks guys.. hence my point in the post above.

No argument with the point of your first post whatsoever, coolkid, but it did not state which currency - if it had all would have been clear. As for the currency fluctuations, if I buy TODAY it will cost me about $4200AUD. What it would have cost me yesterday or what it would cost in a weeks time is for all practical purposes irrelevant to me - I only pay once and nobody is going to readjust the figure for me as some future date. And I know the same may not apply to someone who signs up for the deal next Monday, or whenever. One common denominator we Australians all have is that we all know the value of Aussie dollars to us. If I was to quote a figure in Euros, Rand, Pesos or whatever else, people have to do some mental calculations to work out how much that is in real terms of Aussie dollars. Personally I prefer to default to Aussie dollars when making comments about currencies, and if I ever quote a monetary amount where there is any chance of ambiguity then I specify the currency I'm talking about.

Still, I see you have plenty of supporters for your methodology who seem to think I was making a gratuitous criticism of your post (which I did not intend to do). As others have pointed out the 60,000 bonus miles is good value.........in any currency! ;)

i understand that's what you'd be paying today.. but that really just reiterates what everyone else has been saying! while it might be useful to have a rough indication of the AUD price of the miles, the daily changes in the rate IS what makes it irrelevant to post the AUD value today - someone else reading this post tomorrow will be paying something different and so on and so forth. fair enough i didn't post USD but it really doesnt take much effort to just scope that out oneself.. likewise with just punching in the USD value on the day one intends to buy the miles to find out the conversion to AUD. after all the point of my post was just to talk about this new miles promo.

Even more so for me flying DRW-SYD/MEL-AKL/WLG -prices cheaper than economy return with QF.

Where is the sweet spot to maximise value all you clever maths people?
