Buying a new Golf.

Negotiated a 0.5% Visa fee from 1%. We had already maxed out negotiating positions with regard to price. I usually then move in with requests for free accessories such as full tank of fuel, carpet mats, free first service etc. This is the first time I tried the CC fee.

The Reserve Bank says the CC fee should be on a cost recovery basis only but you never know whether there is a bit of profit in it especially at car dealers. Usually for car servicing they are happy to accept Amex and other cards without charging a CC fee) so their merchant fee might be lower than published
They could/would not budge on Amex which was 2.25%

Still remember trying to negotiate when we bought our daughters car. Like you, the deposit was fee free but wouldn't budge on the balance. Then they let slip that they only charged fees on payments over 2k so everyday on the way to work I went in and paid them said 2k. Was fully paid by the time the car was ready to be picked up

Did seem a bit pointless but was a bit of fun at the time as well.
