Having read the different posts daily, I cannot help but think that you can provide expert advice on travelling to the USA economically and stress free.

In a previous post I requested info on the cheapest fare to the US and car rental advice. Thanks for all that responded. I learnt that it is best to wait until Jan 07 for the airfare sales and also learnt some great info on car rentals in the US. Until the airfares come out, I thought I could prepare by planning my airfare itinerary in advance.

Some questions I have are:
Should we try and upgrade to business class at time of checkin? (as read on a previous post). I am tall (6ft) and would be very impressed if we got an exit row or similar. Previous flights we have asked for an exit row at checkin and have been successful once.

We are at the lowest level on Qantas FF points. One of us only has enough points for a domestic flight. Earning FF points is not a priority for this trip.

On return to Australia, what can we do while sitting at LAX? Is there a lounge of some sort we can pay to go in?

This is our itinerary:

Depart Brisbane 14 Sept 07 to Miami (on 16/9/07 embark on Freedom of the Seas for 14 days cruise)
Disembark cruise in Miami. Rent a car from Port of Miami and drive down to the Florida Keys. Looking at staying in Marathon for 4 days and return car to Key West Int Airport.
Depart Key West Int Airport 4 Oct 07 to San Diego (on 5/10/07 embark on Serenade of the Seas for 15 days cruise)
Depart San Diego 20 Oct 07 to Brisbane

Looking forward to all opinions and advice:D

Do you mean asking for an op-up (free) upgrade at check in or using points/cash to upgrade. I dont believe that asking actually helps and I am pretty sure that QF dont offer a pay for upgrade option.

Simongr - I was reading with interest a thread about upgrading at time of checkin for $500? to upgrade to business class if there were seats available. I think it was AA or United. Unsure if Qantas allows this as you say. I was just wondering if this is worth it?

Ahh - I think that was a UA flight. I am pretty sure QF dont offer this option.
