We’ve been connected (Telstra - FTTN) for around 18 months now and couldn’t be happier. We get a constant download speed of ~72+ bmps and upload of ~31 + bmps

Do you know how far away the node is from your property and from the exchange?

As the crow flies - I’d say a couple hundred metres to the node, and then the same again to the exchange.

We got lucky with the FTTN lottery...

We are FTTC or something. You are lucky to be so close as is my son. He can see it from the lounge room.

OK experiencing the full NBN debacle now.

Install booked for today (first mutually available date).

8am yesterday (sunday!), 2 guys show up unannounced from NBN to install cabling (WTF). "So it can be installed tomorrow". Nature strip being dug up looking for a pit as the visible one "doesnt lead anywhere" (uh, how do you think i have naked DSL currently). Eventually work out it cant be passed and "we just need to dig a small trench". Um, no, you wont be doing that in my recently landscaped front yard. Ok, they'll cancel monday am appointment (you've had over a month to sort this out, but show up the day before........)

Call retailer today to make new appointment, sort out solution, they still have appointment listed as going ahead this morning. Which clearly it cant. But "will get back to me in 1-2 business days".

Hopeless.

Gosh, digging up people's gardens! They made a big enough mess on the verge in front of our house and they will never be allowed to dig up our lawn! Is this common?

Is this common?
As I understand it not particularly but depends on technology.

Was more common under FTTP but this has almost totally stopped (thanks Malcolm)

FTTN and FTTC use existing copper so no digging required.

HFC may need digging if you've never had Telstra Cable/Foxtel before and the HFC won't fit in the existing conduit or it's blocked/broken

We’ve had to have Satellite foxtel. The next door neighbour had some kind of pumping/drilling going for a couple of days last month. Had no idea thought maybe blocked sewer. Maybe that was NBN?

In CBR electric and phone wires are mostly strung between poles to houses at the back of properties thus keeping the streets free of cabling.
As its all above ground until it reaches a pillar/node/cabinet would it be correct to assume that NBN installation should be quick and trouble free.
I don't expect speeds to be fast though as we are a long way from the exchange.

The road I live on is about 4km long.
I'm not aware of any digging during the NBN install.
Oh that’s because we were all dug up for you ! Our street was blocked for days, our verges all dug up. SeverL days the pavers were dug up, put back, dug up, put back. We couldn’t get into our driveway and a couple of days, even the street. Rubbish collection missed. The area from Portrush Road and for I’d say, a kilometre towards Glynburn, had the NBN installers hanging around for almost a year. Started in December last year and left maybe 2 months ago. Fulton Hogan. Used to hate seeing their vehicles.

NBN finally arrived in my area, fortunately as FTTK (I do not recognise “curb”).

Again fortunately (as it turned out), Telstra insisted on doing the installation because I have a monitored alarm. Arrived on time (surprise) but could not get it operating.

So now it’s over to the nbn people to solve the problem.

We had NBN trucks installing cable in our street last week. Whilst only HFC it will be a lot faster than the ADSL.

I spoke to a neighbour and her response was "I'm not a techhead and will just wait until Telstra give me a new plan." Seriously stupid and a prime target to be ripped off.

I'll make sure the elderly residents here aren't hassled and tricked into buying plans they'll never use or mobile plans that are totally useless for them, but stupid neighbour can deal with it herself.

I have Telstra FTTN and it is usually about 4x the ADSL I had prior.
However it frequently drops out for about 2 hours and takes the landline with it. Some good some bad.

Status update.

Just pre-Xmas, technicians returned. We eventually agreed on a compromise to pass from another pit across base of fence (in ground) which is well away from sprinkler system etc and no damage to garden. To their credit they did a neat job.

Earliest agreeable booking was today - so today the next technician showed up (“Between 8 and 12” - showed up at 915 unannounced). Terrible communication from him on site (I suspect he’s not super interested in dealing with the hosueholder - i suggested a couple of times preferred location for router and alternative options - he then just got to work so i had to bail him up just before starting to say “hey which one are you going for” etc). But the great news (for once) was cable passed easily from external point via under house and up to central “utility” cupboard. Took about 45mins.

Didn’t have time to plug and play with new modem (ISP supposedly to call me but no sign of that today - they’ll probably call right as i’m getting kids dinner later or on another call etc.....)

So tonight’s job to plug in new modem and see if it operates. Then call ISP to disconnect old ADSL.

Emails have arrived from ISP with config so we’ll see how we go.
