Name on Ticket not matching Passport

Hi,

I've done a really dumb thing and whilst booking a FF Lon/Hong Kong flight for my family have entered my son's name as "Sam" instead of the full Samuel, which appears on his passport. BA won't change the name.

Are we likely to be able to board the flight? Any thoughts greatly appreciated.

Assuming this award ticket was obtained through the Qantas FF program, then section 13.7.2 of the published terms and conditions applie:

13.7.2 Name changes are not permitted on any Award Flight tickets booked on a oneworldTM Alliance Airline (other than Qantas) or an Airline Partner, at any time.

So the only way to change it is to cancel the award (at a cost of 5000 points) and book a new one. And be aware that there is no certainty that when you cancel the award that the seat will be released back into award inventory. Better to book the new one first if it is available.

I suggest you contact the consulate for the countries you will be flying to/from and ask them if you will experience any problems. And try to get a response in writing. Personally I expect you would be ok, but it is better to ask the respective authorities for each country to be sure.

Sam vs Samuel is only a small error, and unlikely to cause alarm anywhere.

Peter vs Patricia or Paul vs Pauline is more likely to get attention.

As NM says though, best to get confirmation from the countries involved.

As far as the airline goes, the standard allowance is , iirc, something like 1 character being of no issue. Sam vs Samuel isn't that small a difference since Sam could be short for Samantha et al

The countries being visited shouldnt be an issue, but do get a confirmation that BA will allow travel

I don't recall ever booking a flight using my full Christian name. Even the super paranoid American Customs and Immigration have never questioned me about this.

I really doubt you would have a problem..... but then I can't speak with authority of course.

Are not they normally just print the abbrv. on the name and full family name on the tickets? i.e Smith, S/Mr?

I had the the same issue before with my maiden name vs my married name some let me go without any question, other insisted to talk to their manager, but all and all I always allowed to goon board, was just a hassle.

I doubt there'll be a problem. I've flown (internationally) on similar mismatch of name before.

Just get some liquid paper and blot out the 'uel' in his passport. No probs then.

I'm sure you'll have more luck than a guy I saw at a QF checkin counter next to me a few weeks ago who was abusing the checkin girl for not giving him a boarding pass. He wanted to travel on an international flight without a passport. Hmmm...
