Myki Alternative Paywave Full Implementation not until 2028

This is just the ability to pay a standard fare using a credit card. As such no system can identify your age from a CC.

As with other systems such as Oyster and Opal you will need a special card to recognize who you are nd your entitlements. It might be called MYKI !
With Oyster, I bought a Senior Railcard (1/3 off any rail fare), with which you can also get 1/3 off off-peak Tube/Overground fares in London; you just have to get the Railcard added to your Oyster card, at any Rail (not Tube) station. Also (as of last April, at least) at the TfL info desk at Heathrow Terminals 2/3 Underground station. The Railard costs £35 a year or £80 for three years, so you have to do a reasonable amount of UK travel to make it worthwhile; I make two trips a year and I'm definitely up on this deal.

I don't like the systems that have CC tap for public transport payment. Would rather use the rechargeable system smart card.

Why?

For travellers, getting a physical card can be a PITA (and usually comes with a cost). Plus you could be left with unused credit. Mind you, the later can still be an issue with virtual cards. I was lucky yesterday, left SFO using the BART to the airport and had exactly $10.15 on my virtual Clipper. Now have $0.00.

I do still use a physical Opal card but it’s registered and I can get the travel history statement (helps with tax records for work related travel) but I usually jump at contactless where possible OS. In NYC and they’ll apply weekly travel cap if use the same CC/DC. London should be the same, although I have an Oyster card that’s handy for loading up with lose change.

I've never had a problem getting a physical travel card.

How many have expired? That’s another thing that grinds my gears with Myki…

At least Opal cards don’t. Nor should your Oyster.

I’ve also flown to MEL, only to realise I’ve left my Myki at home…😡.

Contactless or virtual cards overcome that problem.

Note that pre COVID in Chicago, you could attend a ticket office, show ID and register your paywave credit/debit card as concessional. It would be then recognised for reduced fares.

Also have a decent collection..

Not however happy with Singapore, who have a monthly fee for unused cards now that they not only take out of any balance on the card but also the $5 deposit. Basically making old cards a paperweight.

Also had an experience in the Gold Coast that reminded me why I don't like using credit cards.
Had a red tapoff on a bus, so tapped again for green.
Turns out that the first tap had registered so my credit card for hit for default fare on top of regular chargers.
Thankfully the chatbot made it fairly easy to claim back the fee, but suspect many don't check their statements, particularly with the current 50c fares in Qld.
