My QF15 pulled due to lack of seasonal demand - in Dec !

Just had a email and my QF 15 flight direct to Brisbane has been pulled due to lack of demand in December. Looking at the schedule it seems like it's every second day. Rebooked on to AA direct flight but chose to reroute through Sydney as AA are not my first choice. Wonder if its just optimising or an aircraft issue or the trump effect is real.

QF/AA announced changes early this morning.

It is not necessarily a lack of seasonal demand but AA backfilling QF (AA's US POS is stronger) during the peak season so MEL-DFW can go daily during that period. QF resumes daily BNE-LAX with 789s from February.

Surprisingly capacity to USA is going up as the A330 from BNE to LAX is going to be a B789, A380s on SYD/MEL to DFW.

"Qantas has also announced it will introduce its Boeing 787 Dreamliner on flights between Brisbane and Los Angeles daily from October 2025. This will significantly increase premium seat availability for Queensland customers with the additional choice of Premium Economy.

As part of the ongoing partnership between American Airlines and Qantas, the airlines will together make some seasonal changes to Brisbane and Melbourne flying over the busy Australian summer period.

For December 2025 and January 2026, the airlines will enable a continuation of daily 787 Dreamliner services between Brisbane and Los Angeles with Qantas operating four flights per week and American Airlines operating three flights per week. For this same period, Qantas will increase Boeing 787 flights between Melbourne and Dallas to daily, with its Boeing 787 flights between Brisbane and Los Angeles returning to daily from February 2026.

As part of the Group’s dual-brand strategy, Jetstar will cease flying between Sydney and Honolulu after the last flight on Friday 24 October 2025 with its Boeing 787 Dreamliner aircraft to be redeployed to other destinations in Asia. Qantas will subsequently operate between 5 to 6 services per week between Sydney and Honolulu, which remains popular amongst customers following the recent launch of its flights from Melbourne to the Hawaiian capital.

As previously announced, Qantas’ final A380 is returning to service with the aircraft deployed on daily flights between Sydney and Dallas Fort Worth from January 2026. This will see more premium seats (First, Business and Premium Economy) offered on the route."

If you wanted to stick with QF metal you could have asked to move to the day before or after.

No surprise HNL is a pure Qantas given it is very much a premium route with how expensive Hawaii is even before you factor in a weak Australian dollar.

The flights cancelled are a330, maybe they are using them for PER/AKL/JHB. I just moved to the Sydney flights, as I have a connecting flight the next day. A bit of extra time in the F lounge and more SC. As far as I know no chance of upgrade with points on AA and in my situation that's a big -ve.

I assumed that because the flight was cancelled there was less rather than more demand. I think they need the aircraft for the other Perth routes, and are using AA to increase capacity. Interestingly the AA announcement says that AA members can use miles to upgrade on qantas flights, not seen anything in the reverse. I luckily mostly succeed with upgrades when flying full fare economy for leisure, due to status from work flights

I'd be tipping either Thailand (HKT or increased BKK out of MEL/BNE, or the out of the box chance of SYD-CEB, complimenting the proposed BNE-CEB on the A321neo).

But that will be at least a while off until at least 2 of the 788s are refurbed and put back into service, IMO.

You can choose seats.
Download the AA app.
Put your QF ticket number into it and you should be able to manage your booking including seat selection

You should be able to via the AA website, typically when flying another OW partner airline you need to do seat selection and check-in via their website and not Qantas.

Thanks for that, will use the App or website. P1 so usually AA put me in the first row of economy if I am not in J, but would be nice to choose before checkin.

You can only use the website if you know the AA PNR
You do not need it for the App it allows you to input the QF ticket number.
