I just completed a 19-sector, 45k mile DONE5 over the last fortnight during which I sampled 6 different one world carriers, of which all but AA included long-haul. Some of my experiences surprised me and notwithstanding the fact that a single flight isn't always a true indicator of a carrier's quality, I thought I'd put in my findings for your interest and comments:

Best Service - CX.
For all-round quality it's hard to go past them

Best Meal - BA
Would you believe it? The Vegetarian Biryani (LHR-BOM) was delicious.

Best Wine - LA
Terrific Chilean wine, especially the Tannat Red (although Iberia's '96 Rioja ran a close second)

Best Seat - IB
A real surprise but a great seat setup in their new Business Plus

Best Lounge - CX Wing (HKG)
It really sets the standard

Best Airport - Madrid T4
New One World terminal is very well designed

Best (only) Handling of pax issues - QF
Painful people arguing over seats were handled with a combination of tact and firmness

Best Feeling - QF
Getting on that last flight home.....

Honourable Mention - AA
They were bearable

Overall Winner - CX
They were top 3 in most categories

Nice writeup, thanks. :) The only thing I'd disagree with is...

It might be new, pretty and well-designed, but I dare say it wasn't built to the same standards we know and expect here in Australia. When I was there last month, there were buckets everywhere, catching rain that was dripping through the ceiling, and the whole area outside the Iberia lounge stunk of the terrible, dank smell of mould.

Looks nice though, and will probably continue to do so until parts of it start falling to pieces.

Cheers,
- Febs.

Yeah, Australian building standards can be so great. Never a problem with the Burnley Tunnel construction was there and there are never any leaks in it ?

Hi SF&
I was in the BA FLounge downstairs (OW Emerald flying J) and haven't tried the Concorde lounge yet. Was surprised to see a lot of Aussie wine in the FLounge - Mt Pleasant Lovedale Semillon was a nice surprise.
As for the ticket, I got a QF DONE5 but I'm a bit fortunate in that I know a few TAs so I got it at a discount....I think some of the other posters would be a better bet for finding the best deal vis which airline to get it ticketed against. As for choice of TA it's hard for me to comment... cheers GDSman
