Kate, a belated welcome to AFF. I've never been a nervous flyer fortunately, so I can't begin to relate. So imy new year wish is that you have jb as your driver when you cross the pond. You'll be in very safe hands. happy New Year to you and yours.

Kate101, something that the media usually fail to point out in cases like AirAsia is that for every tragic flying accident, there are literally thousands of perfectly safe, perfectly comfortable and perfectly enjoyable flights and millions of airline passenger take off and land safely and securely every year. It's little comfort for the families of the AirAsia pax but for you and I (I'm also taking my family on holidays in a few days), I have absolutely no doubt that our biggest problem will be forgetting our toothbrushes in the rush to pack! Enjoy your holiday, enjoy your flights (it's a big component of your holiday) and rest comfortably in the knowledge that air travel is one of the safest forms of travel we know. When you get back, I'd enjoy reading a trip report if you have time!

Thanks guys, I know lots of planes fly every day, but it only takes one mishap to set the nerves on edge...We still have a few weeks, so hoping the nerves calm some what.

I am trying to look past the flights and look to the holiday once we land..It will be amazing

Thanks again guys, safe travels to you all

Last year was the safest year ever for flying.

This ^^^^^ My daughter and I are going on our first over seas trip at the end of January, I am terrified out of my mind, more so after the AirAisa incident.

I had managed to calm and settle myself after the first two major plane incidents earlier this yr, as we had plenty of time, but now this one is a bit to close for my nerves...Basically there is a great big ocean between Australia and the USA and then back again.

God speed, safe and happy travels to everyone in 2015...Us included :)
It was a shocker of a year, but if you have a look at the odds you are pretty safe. Stick to airlines with a good safely record and you will be fine! Unfortunately not always possible to do that if you want to go to more out of the way places - I can remember once in 1999 flying in what I perceived as a pretty dodgy plane in the Ukraine and saying prayers from take off to landing :) However going to the states you will be safe and I hope you have a wonderful time.

Thanks everyone for helping me feel a bit better about flying.

We are flying QANTAS, they are wonderful.

I am keeping my eye on the main prize - the actual holiday, not trying to think about the flight.

I have loads of e-books, music etc and my daughter to amuse me, so fingers crossed you won't see me wigging out on the news come early february....lol

Now here's my list. Includes but not limited to, and not in any particular order:

Fly less as a whole
Visit The Wing
Visit the EK DXB F floor
Achieve P1 (optional)
Get my first EK upgrade from J to F
Have less of the radiant facial in the SYD F Lounge
Try the SYD F lounge Pavlova for the first time
Get to know the HBA staff on first name basis much like CBR JCL and SYD FCL
Fly moderately to MEL.

Lol most of these are #firstworldproblems and much unlike my actual list for this new year :p

1. Fly less
2. Use up points - they are like confetti nowadays and are no good sitting in my account.
3. Visit at least one place that I haven't before.
4. Have a holiday that gives me no option but to relax.

My flying goals for 2015:
1. Safe flying is always at the top of the list, and does affect my choice of airline, although I recognise there are no guarantees
2. Be a little more adventurous - my main overseas trip has me flying with CX/AY/AF/OS/BA/QF (and I appreciate that some will say this already compromises point 1.)
3. Explore new places - much of my past flying was associated with family in UK, and from this year it will be directed more at new horizons
4. Just get out there and see as much as we can while we have the opportunity, and be grateful for it!

4. Take my first shower in the air. <Snip>

That really is fun! I've had the good fortune to be able to do that several times - with another opportunity on the horizon (forgive the pun).

I couldn't quite bring myself to take up the invitation on recent flights between Oz and Enzed, though. That did seem totally over the top for a three or four hour flight. :) I think that one of the very few other occupants of the cabin did, on the return flight. Assume no bathroom at home or in their hotel? :)

Great reading all of these - here are mine:
1. Maintain Exec Platinum with AA, Platinum with Delta, and Premier 1K with United
2. Have international carriers introduce wifi on all long haul flights
3. Get an upgrade between the USA and Australia - no matter my OneWorld status when flying on a QF plane they have NEVER upgraded me in 15+ years of doing this
4. Fly on a 787 Dreamliner (booked to do this with BA in Feb)
5. ALWAYS have a landing for every takeoff!

My goal for the immediate future is to travel around the world first class with my wife. While flying first class with my wife in a 380, to sit at a bar on an aircraft, sipping nice wine and enjoying the experience.

Well I'm about to reach 50 countries this year with a trip to UAE, Jordan, Tunisia and Morocco. Just after I hit 40 yrs old :-(

To some people that is a lot (mostly non travellers), to me its only 25% of the countries. But I'm a believer of spending an appropriate amount of time in each place.

Another wish is for some of the war torn places to find peace.
Also maybe get a new job with travel in it again, after 2 years of no travel, I miss it (even though it was only domestic Y), otherwise destined to stay silver for a long time....

8. Take a flight on the 380
Clazman,
This was one of my goals as well. My wife really dislikes very long flights so I didn't see much chance of achieving it. Then Emirates started flying the A380 DXB-BNE-AKL so my wife gave me some points to give me enough to fly BNE-AKL economy and AKL-BNE business, all on the same day. It cost just over $120 in taxes and I reckon that I ate and drank more than that - a great day.

I love flying, but I used to get very anxious. Here are a couple of tips that have helped me:
- Rescue Remedy pastilles. Start chewing them on the way to the airport. My kids and I go through a pack on a long haul flight. The k8ds don't get nervous, but rescue remedy makes you feel so relaxed. Take an extra pack for the trip home.
- I always get as far forward in the plane that I can. The less I hear can hear the changing engine sounds the less I stress. This doesn't really apply anymore though since I have been reading ask the pilot over the last couple of years. If I haven't got a forward seat secured I always politely ask at check in if they could place me as far forward as possible.
- try not to worry if you feel a change in altitude. It is normal for the pilots to navigate around weather occurrences. Same goes for turbulence - normal and there will be some.
- I take some panadeine forte with me and if I can't relax I will take one.

Travel is my greatest joy outside of my family. I have 3 overseas trips planned/planning now. It is worth overcoming your fear. Arm yourself with reputable information and make sensible decisions like flying Qantas and you will have only wonderful memories.

"Totally over the top" ????

For a mere $850 to fly Emirates in a F cabin for 4 hours, complete with an opportunity to shower in the sky, why wouldn't you ? I hardly think that is OTT... Its an experience!

This is definitely on my list for 2015.
