My experience flying Vietnam Airlines (VN) for the first time

Not a trip report in the true sense but just sharing my experience on an airline not many people have flown.

Part 1:
I recently had the opportunity and pleasure of flying Vietnam Airlines (VN) in their business class for the first time a month ago. I actually did 2 trips - 1 to Paris via SGN and 1 to Seoul via SGN/HAN. Both flights originated from Sydney. All but 1 of the flights were on their A350-900 with that single 1 being on the B787-10. I'm also an AF frequent flyer and have SkyTeam Elite Plus status through their Flying Blue programme.

Overall, VN are a pretty good airline that offers good value for money and a decent product in business class. Check-in at SYD was reasonably easy with not much of a queue in the business class line, which contrasted to the very long queues for economy. This was also during the school holiday period too. Sky Priority is offered for check-in, so you can use that if travelling in prem economy if you have status. No issues with checking through to my final destinations on both occasions. A SkyTeam Lounge invitation is given at check-in, which really is unnecessary, as you'd have access as a business class or status passenger. Anyway, the SkyTeam Lounge in SYD is alright. It's a reasonable size but not that big and can get a bit crowded at peak times. Food offerings are pretty average but there is a tended bar even in the mornings where you can get sparkling wine.

The boarding process is where VN tends to fall down a bit and this was an issue prior to boarding for most of the flights. They try their best to get it organised but it doesn't seem to help. I flew on the SYD-SGN flight for both trips and they try to indicate the different lines for business class/Sky Priority and Economy (which is divided by rows). The intention is there but the execution is somewhat disorganised. What makes it even more confusing for people is that they board passengers who have come in on an NZ flight from AKL, as that connection appears to be tight.

Once on board though, the experience becomes a lot better. The seats are comfortable and reasonably spacious with adequate storage space (in my opinion). I can't remember the design name but they're the same as the old Finnair business seats. The cabin crew are fantastic. They are always very polite, friendly and accommodating. Champagne, juices or water is offered as PDB and then menus are handed out with orders taken before take-off. This was consistently done for all flights. I was quite impressed with the catering. My advice is to always go for the Asian option when travelling Asian airlines. The food was delicious with plenty of champagne if you wanted or G&Ts, which is my preferred pre-meal drink. I love Vietnamese iced coffee and I got plenty of those on my flights! Comfort amenities like pillows and duvets were decent quality. The amenity kits were pretty standard. There was a decent selection of movies with a reasonable amount of relativity new releases on offer (but this is just my opinion and I rarely go to the cinemas). The headsets are disappointing though. They are not noise-cancelling and look cheap, which is made worse when you have to put the ear covers on yourself.
 
Part 2:
Transiting in SGN is probably the weakest part of the whole VN experience. None of my flights docked at an aerobridge, even when they were parked at the gate! That means stairs down and buses to the terminal. This is a big consideration for passengers with mobility issues. I have dodgy legs and joints, so this was not easy for me. Quite a few of the flights also departed from remote stands and you'd think there would be priority for a gate for the long-haul flights to Paris or other widebody flights. This, of course, made the boarding process in SGN a complete shambles with not enough space for all the waiting passengers. Again, though, once on board, it all gets a whole lot better. I think that one of the problems is that SGN is far too small now and priority for aerobridges are given to foreign airlines. Another factor may be cost cutting. I saw this a lot with TG in BKK. It's quite annoying to park at a remote stand when you can see plenty of aerobridge gates available but not so much the case in SGN. I had 1 flight transit through HAN and that was much better as we docked at an aerobridge and also departed from one. I guess HAN is a bit bigger (since it's newer) and also not anywhere nearly as busy as SGN. One other thing to mention is that VN provided separate buses for business class passengers both for disembarking and boarding.

Now for the lounges at their home base. VN's business lounges are called the Lotus Lounge. There are 2 of them in SGN and only 1 in HAN. I preferred the one in SGN over HAN. The main SGN lounge was bigger and didn't feel too cramped even when full. The HAN lounge felt smaller and also felt crowded when full, which made it feel like a cafeteria! Food was better in HAN than SGN, as there was a live noodle station with more variety overall. There are shower facilities in both lounges. Both are quite basic but the HAN ones were better and more spacious with 3 showers available (for the men anyway) as opposed to 2 in SGN. Sky Priority fast-track for immigration and security screening was available in SGN and HAN.

Finally, my feedback for CDG and ICN. Check-in at CDG was fast and easy with Sky Priority fast-track through immigration and security screening. The AF lounge was great with decent champagne on offer all day and pretty good food. Boarding was pretty organised and smooth. Check-in at ICN was also fast and easy but no Sky Priority fast-track for immigration or security screening, probably because I went through T1 and KE's terminal at ICN is T2. The SkyTeam lounge is the KAL Lounge and that is in the main T1 terminal so you'll have to take the shuttle train to the concourse whichcsan take about 10 minutes (minumum) to reach.

Overall, I thought VN provided a pretty good product in the air and good value for money. Their weakest point is the ground experience. Service is excellent but certainly not as polished as the likes of carriers like SQ but I like it when it's a little bit rough around the edges and there is a genuineness to their hospitality and desire to please. And just for context, I paid $4.8k for my flight to Paris 9 months ahead and $3.7k for my flight to Seoul 5 months ahead. And these 2 trips have allowed me to requalify for my SkyTeam Elite Plus status.

That's an amazing bargain!!! You have to get a visa for entry into Vietnam (unless you hold a passport that is exempt).
Oh, it's not obvious when you depart from SGN but you go through the priority lanes for immigration and security at SGN. It's not always signed as Sky Priority or business class but you can go through the crew/diplomat lanes.
 
MH I should clarify the VN J AD2.5K fare is o/w only - ret flt also cost me AD2.5K in SQ J - hope that didn’t confuse you
