In my well planned trip across three countries, 10 flights and two different 'work' personalities needing two suitcases with different attire my plans came unstuck when a few of my assumptions in Singapore.
In preparation for my one hour transit on a future leg, I had carefully positioned by suitcase with suit and fresh clothes at the Left Luggage service landside in T2. I pre-paid for the storage assuming that the one hour of the 'fifth' day I would get for free, it was so close, seemed a shame to pay for the full 24 hours.
On the transit day, my MI flight from CEB arrived ten minutes early which made me confident my plan would work. We did arrive at the extreme end of the T2 finger.
As I walked past the iShopChangi counter, i noticed there was no queue. I've got time, so I'll pick up the vouchers now.
Now walking towards the immigration counters I notice that the Information Counter, also no queue so I can pickup a Wifi password as I go past. I've already got my Passport out. It's OK, I've got this extra time today.
Immigration is going to be easy as I can use the APEC aisle. This day there is also two Elderly Singaporean in the aisle whom also have their two grandkids. (The kids' mum used the self-serve aisle.) It's still OK.
Baggage claim is easy and my 'first leg' bag is waiting Has some gels and scissors so couldn't cabin carry it.. Left Luggage is now the extreme end from where I am. For the first time I'm now a little concerned about my timing.
Get the Left Luggage and the operator pings me for the extra 24 hours. Fair cop, I deserve that. He takes the time to do all of the paperwork, issue credit card slips and enter all of the details into the system.
Up the escalator and find the SQ check-in, I've arrived at 40 minutes to departure. "Have I got time to check this bag onto this flight?" I give the operator my BP and passport. "Yes Sir."
I unlock my bag and merge non-cabin friendly contents Bag 1 into Bag 2, so it's only one piece and I have a light carryon again.
Put bag onto belt "Sorry Sir, flight closed." What???? I'm standing right in front of you!
Apart from all of my minor delays and incorrect ordering of priority I had made a major mistake. When checking-in at CEB they issued my BP all the way to BLR. Consequently the backroom SIN SQ staff believed that everyone had already checked in and were not expecting me to appear with a bag. Had I not been checked through, they might have at least been looking for the one final pax to checkin.
They did accept the bag with a disclaimer that it may not make the flight.
The bag didn't make it, it came on the next flight and SQ arranged for it to be delivered to my Bangalore hotel.
Lesson learned!
