Hi, Hope I'm in the correct area. Anyway, I'm pretty new to this, looking to book an award flight (J at least) for end of Aug next year to go to Malmo, Sweden. I'm thinking to fly to Copenhagen (as it's an easy trip to Malmo) on SIA from Melb/Syd. Im in Canberra but flexible to get a better travel from the other cities (?). I have 427,000 VA points plus more if needed. Then after a few days to a week in Malmo I'm looking to head down to Barcelona and find some fun in the surrounding area before heading back to Aus from there. Mainly because I've never been to Spain, have done pretty much all of Western Europe and am looking for somewhere new that's easy to get back from. I only have about 2 weeks to play with all up. Any other suggestions welcomed. So I guess the real question is, do I book one-way ticket say Melb to Copenhagen and then Barcelona to Melbourne? Or Can i book a multi-city on SIA? Is there any reason why i would need to? I haven't seen the option on the app or website when trying to redeem.....

Hey mate,

No doubt there will be people to give you more clues in the morning but from my limited knowledge, this is what I could come up with.
Velocity to Krisflyer converts @ 1.35 Velocity to 1 Krisflyer Mile. So this would equate to 316296 KrisFlyer Miles I believe??

SYD-CPH J Class = 80750 Miles when done through their website as they apply a 15% discount I believe. + AUD461.45
BAR-SYD J Class = 80750 Miles + EUR279.38

So total = 161500 + Approx AUD880 in taxes. This would mean you have 154796 miles left if you converted ALL your velocity points.
These were both one way fares and you would be finding your own way from CPH to Barca in this example. Also own way from Canberra to Sydney. Perhaps for the europe trip (depending on funds and stuff) you could fly from CPH down to Paris or something and then train it to Barca to see some places on the way? Flying IN to airports in Europe is relatively cheap aside from London. so training it between cities could be worth a shot.

Flying out of barca is not direct, See image. So might be worth looking at flying from somewhere Singapore directly operates from... ? Screen Shot 2016-09-09 at 12.39.38 AM.png

I also know flying out of Scandinavian airports is a lot cheaper than others... So perhaps if possible you could reverse your trip.
Sydney to Barcelona first up.
Make your own way to CPH, do Malmo and then back to CPH to depart directly to Singapore and then to Sydney.

There is no penalty as such for booking one-way award flights with Singapore Airlines.

However, you are entitled to one free stopover (generally in Singapore) on a return award booking. You don't get this when booking one-way flights.

Thanks brown891, you have certainly given me a few things to think about. That might be a better idea re the train and a few more sights and also to fly out direct.

Yep no problems! and I had another quick look for you... SQ do go direct to Barca, just only three times a week. so Sunday, Tuesday and Friday. However Im finding this doesn't include award seats.... they all appear to go via Milan BUT if you type in milan as starting city, ends up being more expensive than going from Barcelona via Milan via singapore.... go figure...

So for yourself wanting to do Copenhagen because it is next to Malmo (which is not silly) and SQ also fly direct works out well.

Have a look at this website which lists some fees for major airports in Europe - sort by the 'costs from' tab.
Comprehensive guide to European airport taxes and fees - Points with a Crew
Alternatively have a play on the SQ website, Eg. Leaving Barca appears cheapest at EUR279 taxes vs Leaving Paris for same amount of points + EUR349 taxes.

It should give you an indication, Barcelona is actually one of the cheaper options compared to Milan etc.
So I would suggest finding your own way from CPH to BCN eg. "direct' train takes 1d 19h haha so could be alright if you stopped in a few places.... but you are strapped for time with 2weeks.

My suggestion:
SYD-CPH via Singapore. ONE WAY in J for previous cost mentioned
Find own way from Malmo to perhaps Hamburg (beautiful city)
Hamburg to Barcelona (depending on time left in trip, otherwise could go to somewhere like Toulouse and take train from there to BCN. Purchasing a multi country train pass is cheap and easy to use. I did this in december/january when went through AMS/BRU/PRG/VIE/INNS/MUN

Leave BCN on either a Sunday Tuesday or Friday direct to SIN and then onto SYD.

Thanks a lot, that looks best in my case as I will be solo to CPH then grabbing a friend from Malmo to travel down south. Never been to Toulouse either so might check that out.
