@yld200 - Very happy to hear that your move to Cardiff has been progressing well. I am sure you (and Lily) will enjoy life in the UK - particularly you will be able to take Lily everywhere by public transport (except planes, eg trains from Cardiff to London) and into most pubs. Go and spread your wings! Safe trip.

You will be able to get your bearings quickly as Cardiff and the surrounding area are compact and the driving is easy.
When you have unpacked the suitcases take some short trips out and about.

Cowbridge for lunch at the Bear Pub, Roath Park for a walk, Castell Coch off the M4 near Radyr for afternoon tea of Bara Brith and Welsh Cakes, Brecon Beacons National Park for a climb up PenYFan when some of the snow has melted !

I just remembered, Miskin Manor is lovely for a posh afternoon tea too.

Thanks for that. Sounds like you know the area well.

My wife has already had 2 spells in Cardiff last year now so will definitely help with getting our bearings sorted.

Yes 18 months last tiime and it was an easy transition from small town Perth to small town Cardiff.. not overwhelming, but the long, grey winter was a downer when you are used to sunny weather.

T-7 days!
Visas are sorted, the dog is booked in on the same flights and we've just moved out of our house this week. It was sad saying goodbye to the home :(
Moving out was an ordeal but bookface market place was great to get rid of everything. We're at the inlaws now and still have to sort through a few boxes but we are 90% there.
And to top it all off, our DOH>MAN place has been changed to q-suites - winner!

Ah - you’ll arrive just in time for the first crocus of the season followed by mass planting of daffodils around Cardiff, and a bit of limpid sunshine ! Croeso

They’ll be in a somber mood after loosing to England on Saturday!

Good luck with the move to Cardiff. It will be different that’s for sure.

having been here for 7 years already, things are getting quite a headache, particularly having properties in Australia and a smsf!

7 years huh? Is the principal residence exemption for CGT still 6 years? Or does the SMSF make that essentially null and void or not even an issue? Yeah, it's complex. Firm I work for has a Cardiff office. Small part of our organisation, but I do love Wales generally. The mountain biking out there is muddy but superb.

Thanks cove

Farewell drinks with some family and friends tonight. Don’t know how productive I’ll be at work tomorrow.

We lived in Southern California for a year and we remember it fondly.
Living away broadens your outlook and we are glad we did it before we had children.

Our home has been lived in by our niece - rent free, she pays all outgoings. She has lived with us for almost 20 years. Accountant said since there is no rental income, the 6 years rule does not apply. We will be back in Australia permanently one day - and do not intend to sell but live in the home. We have a small dog (we brought over the UK with us when we moved here) and she is 15 years old so we are reluctant to take her back home with us (long haul flights, lots of vaccinations, cruelty with undefined period of prison quarantine in Melbourne). We will stay in the UK as long as we have her, then back to Aus after that. Other rental properties, if sold while we are in the UK, will attract a higher CGT. Therefore, we are not likely to sell any while living in the UK.

SMSF has a different tax issue - We have to be very careful of not seen by ATO as controlling and managed it while living in the UK. A member of this forum and his mrs are "in charge" of our smsf :). They hold our "enduring power of attorney" and are directors of our smsf trustee company! Tons of paperwork and audit trails have to be kept for both ATO and ASIC - just in case.

Here are the daffodils and crocuses at St James Park in London on the weekend - it was warm, compared to this time last year we had snow!

The UK is experiencing its warmest February on record. Yesterday saw a temperature of 20.6 in Wales which is the record high in February for the UK

T-13 Hours the dreaded call from a Qatar number pops up on my phone....
Sorry to inform you sir but your flight is delayed to depart at 1AM meaning you''ll miss your Manchester connection..... NOOOOO!!!!!!!!!
Screws everything up, the pooch is on the same flight as us with Qatar cargo which doesn't make our connection Manchester in time which means the animal reception centre is closed until Monday. Currently looking at re-booking options for the pooch and she'll likely travel on Monday now to arrive on Tuesday morning in Manchester after getting another vet health check and department of agriculture export cert.
Meanwhile Qatar is looking to see if they can re-route us via Adelaide tonight to catch our connection to Manchester.
If this week hasn't been stressful enough. ok, time to vomit somewhere quietly...
