Moving to AAdvantage after QF LTG?

CX doesn't like QF.The attempt at Jetstar HK may very well have something to do with it.

PROS: AA EXP
Guaranteed seat on sold out AA domestic flights no matter what. This is a real bonus with the weather in the US in the last few days.

Late last week I discovered another reason why AAdvantage might be considered superior to QFF.

AAdvantage members have greater flexibility when booking CX award flights compared to QFF members.

etc.

I discovered this also by accident speaking to the AA agent after trying J awards SYD-HEL, none on the QF system or agent, but speaking to the AA agent, bang, there were a few options a couple of months out, in J with CX through HKG to EUR for 60k AA miles. For future reference, better in J with CX all the way, than in QF BA AY J mk1.

Hmmm. Interesting that my experience isn't isolated. It doesn't say much for the oneworld alliance. I can understand better availability for an airline's own FFs but it shouldn't otherwise matter.

i am in the same position where I'll probably be ltg in another one or two years. I see that you write in the cons : no upgrades on QF flights. I have been platinum consecutively for 4 years now and have never received an upgrade. But, I do appreciate that whenever I do apply for an upgrade with points, I usually get it.

yes, this is a good benefit. I just got 'caught' on this and had to change my bookings - ended up on an airline that was not OW! But, I really needed to move, and I did! C'est la vie!

Last year, I was traveling from BWI to MIA, on this flight was the head of a US medical association and EXP, he couldn't get from BWI-ORD-STL so he went BWI-MIA-STL as ORD was snowed under, out went the call, flight BWI-MIA oversold, and they simply bumped someone in Y off the flight so he could get to STL in time for his presentation for no extra cost to his original flight. He also got the complimentary upgrade to F (I was doing a SC run for QF).

QF have a similar, lesser feature for their WPs - priority but not guaranteed. For two people including the WP. I guess it's not as useful a feature because our weather here doesn't affect us in the way the US winter can.

Priority Economy seat purchase for up to two, including yourself

Priority Economy seat purchase is available when holding or purchasing a Full Economy ticket for up to two people, including the Platinum member. It is available on any Qantas operated flight with a Qantas flight number (excluding non-jet QantasLink services) for bookings made before midday on the day before travel^.

With the fine print here:

20.4.1 Priority Economy Class Seat Purchase is available to Platinum Members under the following conditions:

(b) a maximum of two seats per request is permitted - one of which must be for the use of the Member, and the other for a person travelling with the Member on a paid ticket;
(c) the booking or request must be made no later than midday (local time in the city of departure) on the day prior to the scheduled departure;
(d) E-Tickets, rather than paper tickets, must be purchased for domestic flights and wherever offered internationally;
(e) Qantas may occasionally have to restrict this facility without prior notice on some routes or under special circumstances;
(f) normal check-in times and conditions apply; and
(g) this service does not apply to Qantas or Jetstar Any Seat Awards.

Another advantage of Aadvantage we received on this last trip was TSA precheck status(and I am only plat).Great to keep your coat,shoes and belt on as well as computers and liquids in the carryons.

I got this a couple of weeks ago : I am qf plat, but was traveling first class domestically on AA. Yes, it was a bonus but I didn't have any AAdvantage status.

That seemed to be a random event in my case in Nov 2013 (10 domestic AA sectors, 9 in F - QF WP, AA nobody).

The middle sectors (2-3 in total) had the TSA precheck on BPs, but the initial and the last few sectors did not.

I'm not sure if WP has anything to do with it.

For reference:

What's next for Qantas frequent flyers with Lifetime Gold status? - Flights | hotels | frequent flyer | business class - Australian Business Traveller

Frequent travellers in Qantas’ economy cabin don’t fare as well in AAdvantage, with some of the cheaper tickets earning no mileage credit at all – specifically those in the N, Q and E buckets – and many other economy fares earning at only 50% mileage.

This is incorrect.

N and Q class fares are now mileage earning fares, at 50% and 25% of base miles flown respectively. What's more, for the majority of fares (SYD-MEL, SYD-BNE), whilst you're AA Platinum or above, you'll earn a minimum 1000 Redeemable Award Miles per fare. You'll only lose if you're looking to credit on EQM over the course of the year.

Just as an interest - I notice that E class isn't mentioned on the mileage table for QANTAS on the AAdvantage website - do E class (sale) fares earn no mileage credit? Any other QANTAS sale fares earn no credit?

Got another pleasant reminder of the benefits of Aadvantage this week.As a LTP and passing 25000 miles for the year(most of my AA travel now is Aawards)I received 10000 bonus miles.

I don't believe E class on QF earns with AAdvantage.

I'm still selective, credited some MH Z class fares this weekend to AA for the 4.8k miles rather than to QFF where it would have earned 240 sc's.

Why? Already have WP requalification booked, so only purview was loyalty bonus (nada) so needed to find a better use.

E class on a QF flight number does not earn on AA:
In my experience, QF sale fares can book into either E, N, O or Q classes - so it depends on the sale you are booking.

When comparing it with the available QF class types, it looks like E is the only bucket to avoid:

https://www.qantas.com.au/fflyer/dyn/program/classTypes

However on short haul dom, unless you are an AA elite, you may be better off crediting to QFF if on a deep discount Y fare.
ie SYD-MEL is 438 base miles. In O or Q you will earn ~110 EQM and ~55 RDM! :shock:
Now everyone's value of miles is different but even with greater earn/burn rates on AA, I would think that 1000 QFF points > 55 AA RDM.
Unless you are taking that flight to help with AA qualification by segments.

Somewhat on topic.. I have a J AKL - mel flight in a few days...should I credit to qf? Or can I credit to AA? Booked on qf website but ek metal...

No status with either airline.
