Moving carry on luggage to another overhead bin??

Talking of kitchen sink brigade, had someone with a wheelie on board ask me to put in the overhead as it was too heavy for them. I said they shouldn't bring it on board if they couldn't lift it and sat down and that person got annoyed with me.

That sounds like a customer at work. Treats staff as her personal servants. Appears to be too scared to touch anything that she wants to get (especially produce or anything out of the milk fridge) and demands staff get it for her all the while complaining about not having time because her bus is coming.

As a short assed older woman I will always accept an offer if someone wants to put my bag up but my motto is if I can't lift it then I don't expect anyone else (including FA) to do it for me

Italians can be like that, very sefl oriented/centred.
I have a neighbour who is like that/thisl
They feel they can have their noisy parties, and play doof doof all night and day long.
Just because my parents have got lemon trees, and they sometimes have borers, this set of neiighbour, him and his son, dare to come and tell my parents off.
The lemon trees were on the block before my parents bought the house.
Not like your "situazione segnor/senora", but they feel they are very important.
Fine for them to wrong others, but they themselves can smoke ciggies all day and all night long, and the cig smell wafts onto my parents place.

Wouldn't want to try that on in the good ole USA. It was quite common for Y pax to dump their bag in the F bins on the way tothe back. But sometimes that can cause you a problem. On one flight on AA out of MCO did that in the bin above row 2. The passenger in 2F was one of the last to board and of course no bin space so the FA was going to gate check his bag. The fellow in 2D told the FA that a fellow from rowXX put a bag in this bin. He was silly enough to have his BP around the wrong way showing me his row number. Right said the FA which bag is it. She then removed that bag and sent it to be gate checked and @f placed his bag in the bin.
So Mr Row XX instead of a speedy exit was going to be delayed.

So I would be wary of intervening personally but i would tell an FA that this was done without my permission and the culprit said they had priority.

But it would have been really tempting to have a rummage through that bag knowing the owner is up the back.

Exactly my feelings on the topic too! Although I do decline from those kind people who offer to help, that probably shouldn't! Although I'm short and older, I do work out and I can lift my bag as per your philosophy - and I've had some lovely older gents, well into their 80s offer to help me, who probably were less able to lift it than I was.

Moving bags within the same bin a cm or two is fine, moving someones bag to another bin is not ok without their permission unless the FA does it.

Hmmm… I don’t like it even if the cabin crew do it, unless they have asked me first! I place my bag in the overhead how I expect it to stay… not have it squished or another bag dumped on top of it by crew!

IME the crew do always ask and dont squish it but take care unlike certain selfish passengers, it usually it ends up on the other side of the aisle.

Have seen instances where the FA in an effort to sort out the overhead storage issue has removed small backpacks and asked the owners to place under the seat in front. Fortunately hasn’t applied to me as I would have been none too happy , with backpack containing fragile equipment placed under the seat in front and thus reducing my feet space. Especially when considering we pay the appropriate fare to check our bags, where as others may have cheaper lite fares and bring their chunky rollon cases on board. As others have posted not generally an issue in VA economy X or exit row seats.

Well given my personal item (hand bag) is under the seat in front have never had an issue with a backpack or roller case staying overhead. The rules are smaller item under the seat, larger item in the overhead. No one should have more than 2 items, if they do well I have no problem with them being forced to gate check the 3rd item.

Then you got some bins really far up. Looking at e.g. the A330 centre / middle bins. I think it's only fair that people help with those if someone's bag seems OK and the person clearly is too short to heave it up there on their own. Even as a middle-of-the-pack height person I need to reach up properly to get my bag to/from there (unless I can stand the seat space instead of the isle).

Completely agree!

Unless the pax requires special assistance, cabin crew shouldn't be required to assist.

With the removal/reduction of minimum height requirement for FAs some are now so short they couldn't help even if they wanted to. If you cant lift it yourself dont pack it.

I remember my first trip to Patagonia, the small group tour which included extensive day hikes said you could only bring a back pack or duffle bag (soft sided) and had to be able to load into our 4WD vehicles yourself (might be the roof rack or boot depending on the leg, as we changed vehicles between Argentina and Chile and again on the way back, plus were boats in parts). This one lady is her 60s would expect one of the younger travelers to load/unload her bag (which of course was also well over the 20kgs allowed). The boys got fed up and stopped doing it after a few days (as she neversaid thank you), so then she tried to directme to do it, I politely said no, if you cant carry it yourself you should have packed less. The tour description clearly outlined the physicality required for the trip, if she was expecting butler service she should have booked with a different company.

I believe there is still a minimum height requirements, at least in terms of the ability to ‘reach’. Cabin crew must be able to access overheads for safety equipment, including life rafts if they are in ceiling or overheads, or in case of fire.

VA you must be able to reach 180cm, QF’s minimum height is 163cm.

AA and UA only need their FAs to be 157cm, I watched one FA stand on the seat to retrieve something from the overhead bin, too short IMO. YMMV.

Historically it’s been first in best dressed regards overhead baggage containers and now some what it to be LIFO (last in first out)

This goes to the heart of priority and orderly boarding - something many airlines aren’t equipped to manage - and reasonable people

Since we are now mired in a world of instant gratification, (my need trumps anyone else’s), it’s become Raffertys rules

IMHO no one ought to load their bag into the overhead locker in “isolated splendour” expecting it to not be moved to accommodate the luggage of others. But optimising space to bag ratio isn’t going to be forte for most flyers. They are particularly clueless when it comes to maximising the packing of different PAX bags with different sizes, weights and dimensions.

People need take a deep breathe and take a little time to optimise the packing

This doesn’t mean taking it upon oneself to “move someone else’s bag 3 doors down”. That’s just pure arrogance and indulgence and selfishness

What would I have done? I would have told the individual to not touch my bag and put it bag. If they didn't I would have got up, got by bag, removed hers dumping it in aisle and put mine back. I'm sure by this time a cabin crew member would have made an appearance and hopefully put this lady in her place.

Many years ago my mother, whose travel days are sadly over and now in Aged Care, found that the pax in front of her had put his bag under his seat, i.e. in her footwell. He claimed that that space also belonged to his seat and hoped mum didn't mind. He was not happy to move it, but once Dad said he had 5 seconds before it would be in the aisle, it was quickly removed. It was TG BKK to SYD, so not a short flight either.
