This should interest people about Air India to Australia.

[h=2]Thursday, August 15, 2013[/h][h=3]Boeing delivers 75th 787 to Air India[/h]
According to Matt Cawby, a local Everett photographer, ZA242 (LN 90, VT-ANN) is at the Everett Delivery Center. This indicates that this particular aircraft has been delivered by Boeing. I expect that the aircraft will fly away to India later tonight or tomorrow. Boeing has now delivered 75 787s since delviveries began almost 2 years ago. This dleivery is Air India's 8th 787 and should allow them to start the planned Australia routes.

I assume as with the UA MEL-SYD dom tag you will not be able to book just the domestic route on AI?

Yes, normal practice in most nations is that there are no 'traffic rights' between domestic cities or towns in the destination country.

'Own stopover' traffic is however allowed. So if a tourist comes in ex India and wants to visit both MEL and SYD, he or she could fly between these and depart for India via the second city.

I'd prefer to travel on NSW TrainLink's XPT train and see the country at eye level, though, and have an 'open jaw' ticket as my routing.
