Airline route are reporting Taiwan's China Airlines is extending its TPE-SYD service to go to AKL 4 times a week from 28 Oct.

Intriguing.... I doubt it will be a hit but I guess it all comes down to pricing.

Wow, so much service, can any of them be making money?

They currently fly BNE-AKL three times a week. They had some very cheap economy and business fares when they started. It was quite tempting, but I never ended up flying with them. The prices went up again this year and are often higher than competition.

I assume they will be removing BNE-AKL in favour of SYD-AKL.

Good god - how many carriers do we need on one route?

Qantas
Virgin
Air New Zealand
Jetstar
LAN
Aerolinas Argentinas
Emirates
China Airlines

any others?

I wonder how many routes around the world have this many carriers? I wonder what route has the most carriers flying it? LHR-JFK? SIN-HKG?

I could be mistaken, but my understanding for flights to NZ with these carriers had something to do with cheaper aircraft parking, maintenance, etc across the ditch.

I've heard that too, for EK, it was cheaper for them to fly across the ditch than park at SYD for 12 hours. Plus they made a bit of money on freight considering both AirNZ and QF \ JQ like to run across using narrow bodies.

BNE-AKL will continue, no changes flagged for those flights. In combination with the BNE services they will have a daily service to NZ, putting them in a position to sell Aus and NZ combos with less need to codeshare/sit pax on another carriers aircraft.

Taipei Taoyuan – Auckland
Overall service will increase from 3 weekly to daily, as 4 weekly Sydney operation will extend to Auckland. This results in capacity reduction for Sydney operation

Makes sense - I also heard that surface shipping between Aus and NZ is amongst the most expensive in the world due to costs at each port, which would make air freight more reasonable.

Who would have thought NZ to be such a lucrative market? Maybe HBA could lure a few for 'parking purposes'.....

Given how many flights they have to SYD each week why don't they just turn the plane around back to DXB ASAP instead?

No idea, I'm simply reporting what the rumor mill has told me.

It could be that an ASAP turn around may do horrible things with timings which means that they can't get the loads for an ASAP turn around. It could also be that they are making additional $ from picking up NZ pax. Or it could simply be a big middle finger to QF \ AirNZ \ VA because they can...

It's a market they want to be in for freight and passenger traffic, while Allowing better connections at the other end.

Maybe it was once true. But these days on most days EK has three flights to SYD that orginated from Dubai. One goes on to AKL, one turns around and the other stays the night for a 6am departure.

Looking at the numbers I would suggest freight revenue is an attraction for EK:

With so much choice I don't feel the need to bother with China Airlines.

The image of the China Airlines jumbo that overshot the runway at Kai Tak in 1993 is somehow still etched in my mind.

Not to mention the LAX flight that flipped over mid-air, the TPE takeoff where the airframe disintegrated or the fire that wrote off a 737 on the ground a few years back!
