Recently we travelled Dubai to Rome with Emirants.Prior to taking off the Flight Attendant told a passenger in the seat in front to turn off mobile phone and as soon as she moved on and we were taking off he was on the phone again - phone on speaker ( whats app ) so he and his partner could talk to kids - this went on on and on for most of the journey as he rang and spoke to different people - he only stopped when food came. Airlines need to have rules in place - when phone can be used and how.in one way we were luck only 5 hour flight and not a evening flight - the guy was in the middle of three seats and pity the person next to him

Apart from ear plugs not much you can do .Is it any different to talking with your passenger during the flight? Unfortunately it comes down to common courtesy. You know in Japan you dont speak on a phone on public transport for this reason..

An announcement was made on QF MEL-SYD on Friday that wi-fi and WhatsApp calls were not permitted. I have no idea what authority they have to do this

Only authority they need is from their company. But it’s not uncommon on any aircraft that has wifi. VA made the same announcement the other day.
