Could there be a mistake with ExpertFlyer?

I have requested an upgrade on a QF international flight.

It is showing as J3 C3 I3 D4.

Strange how D > J. Could one of those J seats be reserved for my upgrade perhaps??? It hasn't cleared yet.

thanks

Chucksta

Slightly surprising that D is higher than J, but it will have no bearing on awards/upgrades

I suggest what you see is transitory; I've seen this sort of thing occur occasionally.

If you check back in an hour or so, or indeed tomorrow, you would find a more rational availability showing.

William Hi Tito,

Welcome to AFF and feel free to post and ask all the questions you wish.

Not many people around here bite :!:

Welcome aboard
there is actually a simple answer..its called overbooking.
Airlines calculate nosho and cancelation passengers by class. These 2 terms are the same but different. Cancelations are those who book anytime before flight departure and then change their mind and rebook or cancel. Noshos are those who actually dont front when the flight is closed at the airport. If they get their cancelation and nosho profiles right = not turning away punters to other airlines by having the cabin full. each class apparently has its own characteristics and so D class may have more historical cancelations or noshos than the othe J cabin classes and thats why at this stage prior to departure there are more seats avail than higher classes (j and C in the cabin) where there is less historical movement.
Revenue management 101 as explained over several beers on an LA SYD flight last year as provided by a QF staffer who worked the dark art that is Yield management...facinating stuff and big bucks lost if they dont do it properly so he said..bugger did give me his business card though
hope that explaination helps

And QF is one of the better airlines at getting it right.

Checking their travelled stats in monthly data on the ASX site says so.They havent been under 80% for international flights this year...I would love a couple of bob each way with centre bet they will crack 1B profit for the first time this year...especially if the difficulty i have getting D class vs prev years is any indicator

Well I had a feeling the takeover bid for QF would fail, so I sold my QF shares at $5 thinking that the shares would fall back to pre-takeover prices... darn was i wrong!

Anyway.. the upgrade cleared...

If QF overbook flights, what happens to upgrades to oversold cabins? Do they just refund the points and bump you back down to economy and say ooops?

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

Dont they only confirm upgrades within 24 hours of departure thus it's unlikely that you will get a confirmed upgrade on a flight that is then oversold?

I guess this is why we sometimes see empty seats in F/J when upgrades havent cleared - they are expecting to sell that last seat at a massive premium rather then confirming your upgrade.

Don Kendall (Kendall aviation) stated that he always wanted one spare seat as an a/c departed as the random person who would pay 'anything' for that seat would far outweigh the other times when it went unused.

Basic 'Yield Management' at work :!:
