Missing Luggage

you ever been to africa say jnb?????????

believe me its true!!!!!!

Been to JNB but luggage has remained intact, thankfully.

Had a couple of misconnected bags; never lost ones.

Apart from that, bags do get lost and no figure would really surprise me. (Although to put that into perspective, I don't know how many total passengers there are every year). Another one of the things the savvy traveller needs to consider the risks for, apart from lengthy delays, bad weather, sudden ill health and so on.

In the past 18 months I've covered 81 sectors (188,050 miles) and have only had 1 experience where my luggage didn't turn up until 2 days after I arrived at my first destination (CLE).
Qantas hadn't loaded it onto my first flight out of ADL.

Overall, my experience has been pretty good.

My wife seems to have a bag go adrift from time to time but they ahve always turned up reasonably quickly. My only personal experience was Qantas managed to not load my bag on a Melbourne to Hobart flight (Oz Fest #5). It came courtesy of Jetstar and arrived about 3 hours later and was delivered to the hotel.

I've only had luggage arrive late twice...

The first time was BNE-MEL-ADL, where despite the fact we used the same plane all the way through, they took my bags off in MEL and forgot to put them back on...

and the second time was PER - SYD - CBR, the flight left PER 1.5 hours late, which gave me enough time to get between the 2 planes in SYD, but it wasn't enough time for my luggage to follow...

The closest to an actual problem was a CBR-MEL-AKL trip where they forgot to get some of the bags off the plane... I was a little worried, but there was still about 100 pax standing around waiting 2 hours after landing, so I knew I wasn't the only one who may not have had bags that night...

In each case however, I have enough stuff in my carryon bag which allows me to stay somewhere the night without my checked luggage without too much trouble, and worst case scenario, I can easily go and buy stuff I need the next morning...

This year I have had my bag go AWOL twice, on the same trip, managed to get it back in 24-48 hours with QF, previously I had a bag go to NRT with JQ which was where the plane was heading after I got off it at SYD, that took three days to get back.

Previous to that I lost a bag at HKG, but it was on the first day the new airport opened!

Can anyone comment on the validity / reliability of the study?

The headline implies that 25 million bags are lost, but the text says that 25 milliion bags are MISHANDLED by airlines in major airports. These are two different things, no? I also wonder if the figures include the thousands of bags mishandled during the British Airways / Heathrow T5 debacle last year??

Interesting too that 25 million bags translates to "one in 100 people" who will not find a bag at the carousel. 1%... Still pretty good odds that your bag(s) will arrive.

The comments are annoying - people complaining that they've lost valuables, cash, essential medicines, etc in checked luggage - sheesh! Don't think travel insurance would help there...

I personally use the comments as a source of entertainment... I personally believe that constructive comments are filtered leaving only the "xyz of sydney your a D**khead" type comments, because they are more interesting to read for news limited target market.

LHR is often names the black hole of baggage. Our experiance was Jan 08, 3 bags left MAN via LHR, SIN to Syd.
1 bag arrived Syd via SIN our flight ;)
1 arrived via BKK same day (pick up from other carousel)
1 arrived day +2 via SIN:evil:

As we were at home not too many problems, except for the wait at lost luggage and forms:arrow:
