Minimum transit still apply if if checked through?

I'm currently exploring some alternative travel options after my honeymoon attempt #3 has been impacted by the CX cuts.

I've got the Qantas multi-city tool offering me flights from SYD-KUL on MH and KUL-DOH on QR with 75mins between flights. I've seen a lot about general transit allowances, but nothing that clarifies things when travelling on the same ticket, and having bags checked through.

This would be part of a larger OWA flight itinerary. I know it would be higher risk than an option with longer transit times (I can't really find any). But has anyone done this or know definitively if the same general transit limits still apply when you're essentially travelling the same ticket?

The minimum connecting times are designed for people on a single ticket, with - usually - through checked bags*.

If you are on separate tickets, the MCT don’t apply… you’re generally on your own!

MCT are designed to get you and your bags from one plane to the other.

Booking engines shouldn’t allow you to book anything under MCT, so you shouldn’t need to worry in that respect.

*some minimum connecting times account for the passenger to collect bags and transfer, as you might do arriving in the USA, or transferring between say LGA and JFK, or between HND and NRT.

Okay thanks for the information. The search tool was prompting me with that option so I wasn't sure. But perhaps if I escalated to purchase, it wouldn't let me proceed with the sale.

Although this is a change to a OWA so I'll have to face the dreaded call centre to make any sort of changes...

Not only that, MCT are defined down to particular airlines, and even flight numbers. The airlines have an incentive to make it workable because as they are on a single ticket, it is their problem to solve misconnects (and it costs them, even if only in staff time).

For your proposed connection, the published MCT is 60 minutes for International to International connection (as you are not on MH377 from CAN):

As per equus' post, if the flight is being offered for you to book then it more than likely meets or exceeds the MCT for that airport and airline combination. MCTs can be as little as 30 minutes in some places.

Amazing thank you! I didn't know that. Perhaps it's acheivable after all. I knew it was unique, but all I had access to was the generic stuff available on the website. I really appreciate it. I'll look into it more.

I have been on several transits through KUL with short connection times - they are pretty well organised and have not experienced any long queues or similar problems. I know this isn't exactly the question here but just wanted to add my endorsement that this is a reasonable option with the 75 minute connection time. The most obvious wildcard is the chance that the SYD-KUL flight is delayed - there are some sites that list average delays by flight number. However, the reliability of that data in the post-Covid recovery we're in right now is probably not high. Perhaps you can get some information from here: Malaysia Airlines Delays/Cancellations

Do consider the difference between MCT and SMCT if you have a choice of flight.

Sensible MCT will assist in mitigating your stress levels.

Thanks for the confirmation. Unfortunately the flights I was considering re this option have since been taken as contacting Qantas has become a 2-week long struggle.

I really appreciate everyone's help. I've been planning this OS trip since 2018 and I'm still yet to have an opportunity to take it. Short notice CX cancellations have put us into a spin trying to find a way to make our March/April trip still work after all this time and all the changes over the years.

...I'm down to our last resort 'creative' options at this point
