I pulled a trigger today.
We are starting a six-week sojourn in Africa on 25 July at NBO, finishing in CPT.
I had scored QF FF J redemptions PER-HKG (CX)-DXB(EK)-NBO(EK), with a one-night HKG stopover and a two-night DXB stopover. Sweet.
PJM hasn't been to Hong Kong and has never stopped over in Dubai. I booked a room at Jumeirah Beach Hotel with the aim of a pleasant outdoor meal at the Jumeirah Italian-themed resto looking up at the light display on the Burj Al Arab, something I rather like.
I haven't cancelled that, but this afternoon I locked in a backup PER-xSYD-JNB with PER-SYD whY redemptions - but at least on an A332, and SYD-JNB the following day in W Sale. $400 PP cancellation fee on the SYD-JNB sector I regard as reasonable insurance.
PER-JNB is exxy in J, and there's no W on the A330. SA J price is not too bad but it's a 2350h departure in old-school J on a creaky A340. Done it back in the day when QF/SA code-shared, but it's a bit of a PITA. Better to put up with QF and go via SYD, I think. Chase the daylight all the way - and maybe even get a glimpse of the Antarctic icepack (seats selected on the port side). Done it in B747 J several times times before.
Organising JNB-NBO can wait until the situation becomes clearer. There are quite a few daily flights, so we can squeeze something in.
I have spent a lot of time planning this Africa trip and I want to make sure I'm there when it's due to kick off, even if it means suffering more whY than I would like.
Return booked is QR revenue J CPT-DOH-PER with a one-night DOH stopover in early September. I'll let that sit for a while. Getting home is the least of the problems.
The main thing is to ensure getting into Africa; out is not such an issue.
We're heading to Raja Ampat later this week for a week of snorkelling/diving on a 32m liveaboard boat that we've taken sole-use with 18 other friends, mostly from PER. I want to enjoy that without stressing about our mid-year trip transitting the ME.
