Malaysia Airlines is fighting back against budget long haul carrier Air Asia X in Brisbane, Melbourne and Perth with online special fares-but they

are unavailable via agents’ reservations systems.
Abdul Manaf Harun, regional vice president for Australasia ,
admitted that its services from the Gold Coast's Coolangatta airport to
Kuala Lumpur had depressed demand from Brisbane.
The low-cost start-up commenced services from Melbourne and Perth in
December with lead-in fares as low as $299.00 one way. This has prompted Malaysia Airlines to offer "weekend" and "internet" specials from
those cities.
The special fares are not available from the carriers two other Australian
gateways,Adelaide and Sydney, and are not distributed via travel agents.
Malaysia Airlines sales from Australia contracted 38 per cent in December.
compared with a 15 per cent cut across the board.
