MH - does cheap mean nasty?

Hoping the learned AFF members can assist.
We are travelling MEL-LHR-MEL in June next year. I am paying for 4 pax & subsidising another 5 so price is important.
The cheapest fares by a long way are with Malaysia. Given that Y class on long haul is awful anyway is MH Y class more awful?
Is it also worth taking into account that we wont earn QF/OW points & SC? [We steal the children's points]
Mr Hazel thinks that no fancy airline meal or extra drink is worth paying more $$$$ for, but we'll ignore him for the moment.

On the contrary, I think MH has one of the best whY products in the industry. I think you'll find them a lot more pleasant than most other whY products, I'd put them up there with QF.

From my experience, QF Y and MH Y are comparable. While there are pro's and con's to each, they are much the same overall.

Certainly I found it easier to get a drink service on MH than QF

I flew MH Y a year or so ago from MEL-KUL.
It was quite good and generally a comfortable flight, however after flying with Singapore Airlines Y 6 months later, I could definately see how cheap MH were.

At the start of the flight on MH we got a refresher towel, more like refresher tissue!
On SQ we got proper hot towels, simple I know but its those little things that leave the biggest impression
We were offered a drink(only orange juice) before takeoff on SQ.
MH no drink offered before take off.

MH staff were hard to find during the flight, and spent more time chatting in the galley than serving passengers.
SQ staff were world class, constantly offering refreshments, making sure we're comfortable and generally being very friendly.

I am not saying I won't fly MH again, as they were good but if there is only a small price difference on fare of $100-$200 I would always go SQ or QF over MH.

MH have better leg room; Singapore Airlines are good but if the price is a few dollars cheaper then MH is worth it.

Everyone's bloating about SQ - well yes they are and have been voted the best airline on the planet year after year!
But when it comes to price, SQ are very rarely on the more affordable side of the fence!

I flew a MEL-KUL-MEL flight earlier this year - which was actually only days after flying a MEL-LHR-MEL with CX (of which i will NEVER fly again). After the nightmare i had with CX (which i only flew because i was being a tight cough) i was pretty much sh*tting myself about my MH flight - however i was wrong to worry. The flight was perfect. Yes MH's planes are old, but that works in their favor. On the older planes they didnt try so hard to fit Y pax in like sardines so the seats are much more comfortably spaced - and the leg room was surprisingly great - i would even go as far to say, better than QF.

As for IFE and food - well QF does beat them there, but the food was sufficient and IFE was ok.

Just to be different... I've never had a particually good flight in SQ Y. They've never been terrible, but the old 744's are outdated (and yes not found on too many routes now), the crews robotic and I found the food to be pretty poor and the drinks difficult to chase down.

Not often I say this... but QF won hands down

Also - do you have to have Enrich status to use the MH lounges?

That or you need to fly at least Economy Plus, or whatever that pseudo-Business fare is.


MH aren't bad as a product. My last experience with them wasn't great, but that's only because I've flown MH almost annually since I was a little munchkin, so I've seen the progressive decrease in quality in Y service (but then again so has every other long-time airline, on average).
