Im sure Air Canada , would be extremely thrilled to have their 777 aircraft being shown in this article . How bloody hard is it to get a picture of a Malaysian 777 to attach to this article , there are literally thousands of images available , especially at the moment . Absolutely poor journalism from the SMH.

I agree.
Australian media outlets continue to show footage of Malaysia Airlines 747s - what are they thinking and who is doing their proof reading?

I know we are all hoping for good news and fearing bad news. Daylight should help the search efforts today.
This is devastating news so far for so many families so let's all hope for good news today.

The Australians have been named... 2 couples from Brisbane and a couple from Sydney....

I saw a photo on the yahoo homepage of one of the Brisbane couples courtesy of good old Facebook.

It makes me wonder if the media looked them up on FB & the security settings on who could access the photos were still on the default of 'public' & not set to 'friends'.

IMHO it should be illegal for any media outlet to post photos of the deceased persons from Facebook without permission ftom their immediate family.

This has been going on for years. Apparently JQ still have 717's.

Following this story with you all, sadly with fading hope.
My thoughts and prayers are with all involved. Those poor families, can't imagine what they are going through.

What is going on with all the stolen passports?! Which system do they use in KL that couldn't detect any of them?

The Italian and Austrian passport holders both got their ticket from China Southern.

There is an unconfirmed report from Russia that the Russian national on board was alive and had had his passport stolen and also the ticket issued by China Southern.
In no way does this mean a terrorist attack but certainly will be investigated.

Is there any reports on this? Do you have a source?

also quite shocked at the stolen passports, isn't there some sort of international list of stolen or cancelled passports? Surely it's not difficult for a computer to check each of the passport document numbers.

Yes - exactly .... regardless of any link possibly being established or discounted down the line, how is it that 'reported' stolen passports can get people airside at a major hub like KL? Wouldn't they 'flag' as just that, reported stolen documents? Any informed advice on how this all works is greatly appreciated.

One just hopes that this is not a Terrorist attack. Whilst loss of life is never good in any accident it is unforgivable when life is deliberately taken away by selfish people....

I hope in some ways it is a mechanical failure that can be quickly identified and fixed thus saving the potential of further loss of life.

I wonder too how they managed to get through customs on lost passports that once would presume would have been cancelled. It is a while since I have been through KL and if this is an indication of the security at KL then it is highly unlikely that I would pass through there again

Thoughts are with all those that look like being lost..

KL isn't a major hub, compared to its neighbours. The very fact it's a port where our immigration feels the need to permanently send staffers to do secondary checks suggests concerns about the processes.

I had problems with entry last year on one occasion where a stamp was supposedly smaller than it should be for a KLIA arrival stamp, I would of thought the computer would show a formal entry but the matter was resolved with discussion with a supervisor and a ruler.

I can concur that I noticed Australian immigration officials at KLIA a few weeks ago when I flew back from KUL > MEL.

Yet last night when I flew back from SIN, no Australian immigration officials were undertaking secondary checks at the gate in SIN.

Interesting observation I thought too.

I posted a few months back I was concerned when I boarded a MH flight at KUL that it was possible to pass through all security checks without surrendering a 750ml bottle of water. I found security at KUL somewhat lax compared to any of the western airports where I had boarded flights on that trip.

It is in the link.Austrian and Italian governments have confirmed those 2 passports stolen and the 2 named are alive.both passports stolen in Thailand.

To add a summary of possibilities-

This makes the assumption that they started their journey in KL. If you're in transit, you don't need to show your passport. They could very well have started their trip from another port that has the subpar passport security.

/speculation

Regarding the secondary passport checking at the gate at KUL, my experience has been they glance at your passport photo, look at you, and let you go. But I wonder if there's some profiling going on that I simply haven't been subjected to. This also didn't happen prior to every flight...

It wouldn't be the first time that someone purchased a codeshare rather than the metal they actually wanted.

Yes, that's what I'd expect. The first priority would be to try to regain control of the aircraft. Radio calls from a stricken aircraft are mostly for the benefit of others, not the occupants of the plane.

Do you recall the length of time from the incident on QF30 till you made your radio call?

It was within a minute...but the aircraft was under control, so it got to the top of the queue.
